Denali is the highest mountain in North America at 6,190 metres, in the Alaska Range. Measured as a rise from its own base rather than from sea level, it is the tallest land mountain on Earth — roughly 5,500 metres from the surrounding lowland to the summit, which exceeds Everest's rise above the Tibetan plateau.
Base-to-summit, the biggest on land
Everest's summit is far higher above sea level, but Everest rises from the Tibetan plateau, which is itself around 5,000 metres up. Its rise above its immediate surroundings is roughly 3,600 to 4,600 metres depending on the side.
Denali rises from lowlands around 600 metres to 6,190 — a vertical relief of about 5,500 metres, achieved over a relatively short horizontal distance. On that measure it is the greatest base-to-peak rise of any mountain entirely on land. Mauna Kea beats both if measured from the seafloor, but most of it is underwater.
The visual consequence is that Denali looks enormous from the tundra in a way that Everest does not from the Khumbu, where surrounding peaks compete with it. From Wonder Lake in the national park, the mountain occupies the horizon alone.
Why the altitude hits harder here
Denali is about 1,200 metres lower than Aconcagua and nearly 2,700 lower than Everest, and yet climbers routinely report that it feels higher than its numbers. The reason is latitude.
The atmosphere is not a uniform shell. It bulges at the equator and is thinner over the poles, so at a given elevation the barometric pressure is lower at high latitude than at low. Denali sits at about 63 degrees north — only around 320 km from the Arctic Circle — and its effective, physiological altitude is therefore considerably greater than 6,190 metres would suggest at tropical latitudes. Estimates commonly put it several hundred metres higher in equivalent terms.
The same latitude produces extreme cold. Temperatures on the upper mountain regularly fall below minus 40 degrees, and an automated station near the summit has recorded readings approaching minus 60 with wind chill far beyond that. Denali is frequently described as the coldest mountain in the world outside Antarctica, and frostbite is the characteristic injury of a Denali expedition.
What lives on the mountain
Almost nothing lives high on Denali — there is no vegetation above the glacier and no resident animal life on the upper mountain. Ravens reach base camp and raid food caches with some determination, which is why parties bury caches deep and mark them carefully.
Below, the Alaska Range supports Dall sheep on the ridges, grizzly and black bears, caribou, moose and wolves, and the transition from glaciated peaks to tundra and then to boreal forest happens within a short distance. The mountain's lower flanks are where that gradient is steepest anywhere in the range.
Everything is carried
The standard West Buttress route begins with a ski-plane flight from Talkeetna onto the Kahiltna Glacier at around 2,200 metres. From there climbers spend two to three weeks moving up the mountain, and there are no porters, no yaks and no commercial load-carrying.
Parties haul their own food, fuel, tents and equipment, typically using a combination of backpack and sled, and cache supplies at successive camps using the technique of carrying high and sleeping low to acclimatise. A full expedition load is heavy, and the physical demand of moving it repeatedly up a glacier is the defining experience of the climb.
The National Park Service maintains a ranger camp at 4,300 metres with a medical presence, and it operates a Clean Mountain Can system requiring climbers to carry out solid human waste — a policy adopted after decades of accumulation on the glaciers.
Success rates hover around half in most seasons, with weather the usual determinant. Parties frequently sit out multi-day storms at 4,300 or 5,200 metres, and a summit window can fail to appear within an expedition's food supply.
How high it really is
Denali's official height was revised in 2015 from 6,194 metres to 6,190, following a GPS survey — a four-metre correction to a figure that had stood since 1953, and one that reflected better instrumentation rather than any change in the mountain.
The mountain is also still growing. The Alaska Range is being uplifted along the Denali Fault, a major strike-slip system running through the range, and the bend in that fault near the mountain concentrates compression and drives the uplift. The fault produced a magnitude 7.9 earthquake in 2002 that ruptured for hundreds of kilometres and triggered thousands of landslides.
1913, and the name that came back
The first ascent of the true summit came on 7 June 1913, by Hudson Stuck, Harry Karstens, Robert Tatum and Walter Harper — Harper, an Athabascan Alaskan, being first to set foot on top.
An earlier attempt in 1910, the Sourdough Expedition, was made by a group of Alaskan miners with minimal equipment who reached the north summit — the lower of the two — and left a spruce pole. Stuck's party sighted that pole from the higher south summit, confirming the earlier climb.
The mountain's Koyukon Athabascan name, Deenaalee, means the high one or the great one, and had been in use for a very long time. In 1896 a prospector named it Mount McKinley for the presidential candidate William McKinley, who had no connection to Alaska and never visited. Alaska restored Denali as the state name in 1975 and petitioned federally for decades, blocked repeatedly by Ohio's congressional delegation. The federal name was changed to Denali in 2015.
A park the size of a small country
Denali National Park and Preserve covers roughly 24,500 km² — larger than Wales — and it is managed with unusual restraint. A single road runs 148 km into the park, and private vehicles are largely prohibited beyond an early checkpoint; visitors travel by shuttle bus.
The result is a landscape where wildlife is visible from the road because it has not been displaced by traffic: grizzly bears, caribou, Dall sheep, moose and wolves are all present, and the park was originally established in 1917 primarily to protect Dall sheep from market hunting rather than to protect the mountain.
The park road has itself become a problem. A section at Pretty Rocks crosses a slowly moving landslide that accelerated sharply in recent years as permafrost thawed, forcing closure of the road's western half and construction of a bridge over the moving ground — one of the more concrete illustrations of thaw affecting infrastructure in the American Arctic.
The West Buttress, camp by camp
The standard route was pioneered by Bradford Washburn in 1951, and it remains the line almost every expedition follows.
From the Kahiltna base at 2,200 metres, parties move up the glacier to camps at roughly 2,400, 3,400 and 4,300 metres, the last of these the main staging camp with the ranger station. Above it the route climbs a fixed-rope headwall to the ridge at 5,000 metres, follows the buttress to high camp at 5,200, and makes the summit push across the Football Field and up the summit ridge.
Washburn's other contribution was photographic: his aerial images of the Alaska Range, taken over decades, are both a mountaineering resource and a documentary record of glacier extent that researchers now use as a baseline for measuring change.
Weather that arrives from the Bering Sea
Denali's storms come off the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska, and the mountain's isolation and height mean it intercepts them with nothing in the way. Multi-day storms with sustained winds well over 100 km/h are a normal feature of a season, and the mountain has recorded gusts far beyond that.
Because the route is self-supported, a storm at high camp is a serious situation: parties must have fuel and food for the wait, tents anchored in walled snow pits, and the discipline not to move in conditions where navigation on the featureless upper slopes becomes impossible. Several of the mountain's worst accidents have involved descending parties losing the route in whiteout above 5,000 metres.
The climbing season is short — roughly May to early July — balancing enough daylight and warmth to be survivable against the summer melt that makes the lower glacier hazardous. By late June the Kahiltna is deteriorating and ski-plane landings become unreliable.
Denali against the other cold summits
Among the Seven Summits, Denali occupies a specific niche:
- Against Aconcagua: Aconcagua is higher by more than 750 metres but warmer, shorter and supported by mules and base-camp infrastructure. Denali is colder, longer, and entirely self-supported.
- Against Vinson: comparable cold, but Vinson is lower, shorter and logistically simpler once you are on the continent.
- Against Everest: vastly lower, but with no fixed rope, no oxygen, no Sherpa support and no helicopter rescue above the glacier in most conditions.
Most people who complete the Seven Summits describe Denali as the hardest of them after Everest, and a fair number describe it as the hardest full stop.
