Introduction

Narragansett Bay

Narragansett Bay is a drowned glacial valley extending 45 km inland from the Atlantic Ocean, covering roughly 380 square km and containing over 30 islands. The bay was formed when rising sea levels after the last ice age flooded glacially carved valleys and lowlands. The bay's islands — including Aquidneck (the state's largest), Conanicut, and Prudence — are the tops of glacial drumlins and moraines that were not submerged. The bay supports a productive estuary ecosystem and moderates the climate of the surrounding land.

Block Island

Block Island, located 21 km south of the mainland, is a 25 square km island formed from glacial moraine deposits. Glacial Kettle Ponds

Rhode Island contains hundreds of kettle ponds — circular depressions formed when blocks of glacial ice buried in sediment melted, leaving bowl-shaped holes. Worden Pond at 4.4 square km is the largest natural freshwater lake in the state. The kettle ponds are concentrated in the southern part of the state on the glacial outwash plain.
