John Muir first visited in 1879 and found the Muir Glacier's face at what is now the mid-bay area. Since then, Muir Glacier alone has retreated over 50 kilometers and is no longer a tidewater glacier — it has pulled back entirely onto land. While some individual glaciers in the park are advancing (notably the Johns Hopkins Glacier), the overall trend of ice loss is accelerating due to rising temperatures.
