By the time the third floor was reached around 1178, the tower had already begun to lean noticeably to the north. Construction halted for nearly a century, partly due to wars between Pisa and neighboring city-states, which inadvertently allowed the soil to settle and likely prevented the tower from collapsing.
When construction resumed around 1272 under Giovanni di Simone, the lean had shifted direction to the south. Di Simone attempted to compensate by making the columns and arches on the south side taller than those on the north, giving the tower a slight banana-curve shape. The bell chamber at the top, added in 1372, was similarly adjusted. Between 1990 and 2001, engineers removed soil from beneath the north side, reducing the tilt from 5.5 degrees to its current 3.97 degrees and extending the tower's projected lifespan by several hundred years.
