Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca royal estate perched on a narrow ridge at about 2,430 metres (7,970 ft) in Peru's Cusco Region, roughly 80 km north-west of the city of Cusco. Built during the reign of the emperor Pachacuti and abandoned barely a century later, it survives as the most complete Inca settlement anywhere because the Spanish never found it.

The Ridge, the River, and Why This Spot

Machu Picchu occupies a saddle between two peaks — Machu Picchu ("old mountain") to the south and the steeper, more photogenic Huayna Picchu ("young mountain") to the north. The site is not on a summit, which surprises most first-time visitors. It sits several hundred metres below the ridgeline, on the only reasonably flat ground for miles.

Beneath it, the Urubamba River loops around the base of the massif in a near-complete horseshoe, cutting a gorge close to 500 metres deep. That river is the reason the location works. It carved the granite batholith the Incas built with, it defined a defensible position enclosed on three sides by cliffs, and its valley formed the corridor linking the high Andean plateau around Cusco to the humid forests dropping away toward the Amazon basin.

The elevation matters too. At around 2,430 metres, Machu Picchu is roughly a kilometre lower than Cusco, which sits near 3,400 metres. Visitors who arrive expecting thin air are often relieved. The Incas chose a warm, wet, sheltered pocket — good for maize, good for coca, and comfortable year-round for a royal household escaping the cold of the altiplano. Anyone planning a trip should understand the wider geography of the Andes, because the range's abrupt altitude bands explain almost everything about how the Incas farmed and travelled.

Pachacuti's Estate, Not a Lost Civilisation

For most of the 20th century Machu Picchu was described as a mysterious citadel, a religious sanctuary, or a last refuge of the Inca. The evidence now points somewhere far more ordinary: it was a country estate belonging to one emperor and his lineage.

The case rests on 16th-century Spanish colonial documents identifying a royal property called Picchu in this district, tied to the panaca — the corporate descent group — of Pachacuti, who reigned from roughly 1438 to 1471 and who transformed the Inca state from a regional power into an empire spanning the western spine of South America. Radiocarbon dates from the site are broadly consistent with construction beginning in the mid-15th century.

An estate of this kind housed a modest permanent staff — perhaps a few hundred people — swelling when the emperor and his retinue were in residence. That fits the archaeology: around 200 structures, storage capacity adequate for a small resident population rather than a city, and burial remains showing a mixed population drawn from across the empire, consistent with retainers resettled from distant provinces.

Reading the Stonework

The site divides visibly into an agricultural sector of terraces and an urban sector of buildings, separated by a long dry moat. Within the urban zone, quality of masonry tracks status almost perfectly.

Two Grades of Wall

Ordinary buildings use pirca — rough fieldstone set in mud mortar, originally plastered and thatched. The high-status structures use ashlar: granite blocks cut and ground so precisely that they interlock without mortar at all. The Temple of the Sun, the Room of the Three Windows, and the Principal Temple show this technique at its best, with slightly pillowed faces and joints that a blade will not enter.

The Intihuatana

Carved from bedrock on the highest point of the urban sector, the Intihuatana is a stepped stone with a projecting pillar. Its name is usually glossed as "hitching post of the sun". Similar carved outcrops existed at other Inca sites; most were destroyed by Spanish clergy hunting idolatry, which makes this one unusually important. Its edges align with significant horizon points, though the more elaborate astronomical claims made for it outrun the evidence.

What You Cannot See

The most impressive engineering at Machu Picchu is buried. Beneath the visible terraces lie layered beds of coarse rock, gravel, and soil that shed roughly two metres of annual rainfall without waterlogging or slumping. Archaeologists studying the site have argued that a large share of the total construction effort went below ground. A spring on the north slope was tapped and channelled to a stone canal feeding a chain of sixteen fountains descending through the settlement — a gravity water supply that still runs when the channel is cleared.

1911, and the People Already Living There

Hiram Bingham, a Yale lecturer in Latin American history, reached the ridge in July 1911 while searching for Vilcabamba, the jungle stronghold where the last Inca rulers held out until 1572. He was led up by a local farmer, Melchor Arteaga. At the top he found two families — the Richartes and the Alvarezes — farming the old terraces, and a boy from one of those households showed him the ruins.

So the site was never lost in any literal sense. Local people knew it; earlier prospectors had scratched names into the walls. What Bingham supplied was publicity, photographs, and the machinery of a National Geographic-backed expedition. He also shipped thousands of artefacts to Yale, which returned them to Peru only after a long dispute settled around 2010–2012.

Bingham was, incidentally, wrong about nearly everything he concluded. He thought he had found Vilcabamba. He later decided it was Tampu Tocco, the mythical origin place of the Incas. The actual Vilcabamba lies at Espíritu Pampa, deeper in the forest, a site Bingham himself visited and dismissed.

Machu Picchu Beside Petra: Two "Lost Cities" That Were Never Lost

The comparison is instructive because the two sites share a reputation and almost nothing else. Petra in southern Jordan was the caravan capital of the Nabataeans, flourishing from the 4th century BCE, and it too was "rediscovered" by an outsider — the Swiss traveller Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812 — despite Bedouin communities living in and around it continuously.

The engineering runs in opposite directions. Petra is subtractive: its famous facades were carved into sandstone cliffs, monuments cut away from living rock. Machu Picchu is additive: granite was quarried, shaped, hauled, and stacked into free-standing walls. Petra's builders worked a soft stone in a desert and had to conjure water, building dams and ceramic pipelines to survive flash floods. Machu Picchu's builders worked one of the hardest stones on Earth in a cloud forest and had to get rid of water.

Both were abandoned within a few generations of their peak — Petra fading as trade shifted to sea routes and after a severe earthquake in 363 CE, Machu Picchu emptying as the Inca state collapsed under Spanish invasion and epidemic disease. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and both were named among the New7Wonders of the World in 2007, a poll that transformed visitor numbers at each.

Getting There, and the Limits on Numbers

There is no road to Machu Picchu. Almost everyone arrives by train from Cusco, Poroy, or Ollantaytambo to the valley town of Aguas Calientes, then takes a switchback bus or walks up the steep path. The alternative is the classic Inca Trail, a four-day trek over the 4,215-metre Dead Woman's Pass, which is permit-limited and typically books out months ahead. Alternative routes — Salkantay, Lares, Inca Jungle — exist partly because Inca Trail permits are so scarce.

Entry itself is capped. Peru's Ministry of Culture sells timed tickets on fixed one-way circuits, with a daily ceiling in the low thousands that has been repeatedly adjusted, raised in high season and cut back when conservation reports warn of erosion. Guides are compulsory on some circuits. The practical effect is that spontaneous visits rarely work; buy tickets well in advance and pick the circuit that includes the sectors you actually want to see, since you cannot double back.

What Is Still Genuinely Unknown

The Incas kept records on khipu, knotted cord devices whose numerical content is partly readable and whose narrative content, if any, is not. There is no Inca text describing Machu Picchu. Everything known comes from archaeology and from Spanish colonial paperwork written by people who never saw the place.

That leaves real gaps. Nobody knows how the granite blocks were finished to such tolerances, though experiments suggest patient abrasion with harder hammerstones rather than metal tools. Nobody knows why the estate was abandoned rather than sacked — it shows no destruction layer, no burning, no battle. The likeliest answer is mundane: when the lineage that owned and staffed it lost its wealth and its people to conquest and smallpox, an expensive holiday palace three days' walk from anywhere simply stopped being maintained.

Machu Picchu endures as the clearest surviving statement of what Inca builders could do, and it repays a visit far more if you arrive knowing it was a working estate rather than a riddle. To place it properly in its setting, it is worth reading about Peru's regions and landscapes and about Cusco, the imperial capital that the estate was built to escape.
