Scotts Bluff
Scotts Bluff National Monument in western Nebraska features a massive bluff rising 240 meters above the North Platte River. The bluff is composed of layers of Brule Clay, Arikaree sandstone, and volcanic ash deposited 20-30 million years ago. Mitchell Pass, a narrow gap through the bluffs, was a key passage on the Oregon Trail. The monument preserves Oregon Trail ruts still visible in the sandstone after nearly 200 years.
Niobrara River Valley
The Niobrara River in northern Nebraska flows through a valley where six distinct ecosystems converge: eastern deciduous forest, western coniferous forest, tallgrass prairie, mixed-grass prairie, sandhills prairie, and northern boreal forest. The river has carved a 30-60 meter canyon through Pierre Shale and Niobrara Chalk, exposing fossils from the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway. The 122-km National Scenic River designation protects over 90 waterfalls along the valley.
