The tallest building in Metro Manila is the Grand Hyatt Manila South Tower, also known as Metrobank Center, which reaches 318 metres (1,043 feet) across 66 storeys in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig. Completed in 2017, it is also the tallest completed building in the Philippines, and it stands outside the City of Manila proper — a distinction that trips up most rankings of the city's skyline.

The lower and middle sections hold the Grand Hyatt Manila hotel and its residences, while office floors occupy other levels — hence the building carrying two names in common use. Rankings that list it as "Metrobank Center" and rankings that list it as "Grand Hyatt Manila South Tower" are describing the same structure, which is one reason published lists of the city's tallest buildings so often disagree with each other.
Its form is deliberately restrained — a slender rectangular shaft with a stepped crown, clad largely in glass, without the sculptural flourishes favoured in Dubai or Shanghai. That restraint reflects its programme: a building expected to earn its return from hotel rooms, apartments and lettable office floors rather than from being a landmark, which is characteristic of how height has been financed in Metro Manila.
Why the Tallest Tower Is Not in Manila Proper
"Manila" is used in two quite different senses, and the distinction matters enormously here. The City of Manila is a single local government unit of roughly 43 square kilometres and around 1.8 million people, containing Intramuros, Binondo, Ermita and Malate. Metro Manila — formally the National Capital Region — is a conurbation of sixteen cities plus one municipality, with a population above 13 million.
Almost nothing in the City of Manila is especially tall. The historic core is low-rise, much of it rebuilt after the devastating 1945 Battle of Manila, and height there is further constrained by proximity to the old Manila Bay reclamation areas and by heritage protections around Intramuros. The genuine skyline sits in the surrounding cities: Makati, Taguig, Pasig and Mandaluyong.
So the honest answer to "what is the tallest building in Manila" is a two-part one. In Metro Manila, it is Grand Hyatt Manila South Tower at 318 m. Within the administrative City of Manila alone, the tallest structures are considerably shorter residential towers, generally well under 200 m. Most published answers silently mean the metro. How Bonifacio Global City Overtook Makati
For most of the post-war era, Makati was the unambiguous centre of Philippine high finance and the natural home of its tallest buildings. The Ayala family developed it from farmland into the country's premier central business district from the 1950s onward, and Ayala Avenue remains a dense corridor of towers.
Bonifacio Global City is much newer. The land was formerly part of Fort Bonifacio, a military reservation, and was sold off and redeveloped from the mid-1990s. Because it was master-planned from scratch on a large contiguous site, it could adopt a wider street grid, deeper podiums and a more permissive height envelope than Makati's older fabric allowed. That combination is what let BGC take the height crown within roughly two decades of breaking ground.
Ortigas Center, straddling Pasig and Mandaluyong, forms the third major cluster and holds a number of towers in the 200–270 m range. The consequence is that Metro Manila has no single dominant skyline silhouette in the way Hong Kong or Singapore does — it has three or four competing ones, several kilometres apart, which is partly a response to the region's notorious traffic congestion pushing office demand outward rather than concentrating it.
The dispersal has a clear driver. Metro Manila has no single metropolitan planning authority with power over land use across all sixteen cities, so each city has competed to attract its own commercial core, its own mall anchor and its own tower cluster. Where a unitary city government might have concentrated density along a mass-transit spine, Metro Manila instead produced several rival downtowns connected by chronically congested roads.
The Towers Chasing It
Several projects have been announced or built that approach or claim to exceed the 318 m mark, and reporting on them is inconsistent. Notable contenders in the upper tier of the Metro Manila skyline include towers in the 250–320 m band across BGC, Makati and the Manila Bay reclamation districts, with a number of residential supertalls proposed for the bay area in particular.
Two cautions are worth applying to any list you encounter. First, announced height and completed height frequently diverge; Philippine supertall projects have a long record of redesign, delay and quiet downsizing. Second, "height" may be measured to architectural top, to roof, or to the tip of a spire or antenna, and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat only counts architectural elements — not antennae — toward official rankings. A tower advertised at 350 m to its mast may rank below one at 318 m to its architectural top.
Building Tall on an Earthquake Belt
Metro Manila sits in one of the most seismically demanding environments of any major skyline. The Philippines lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, and the metropolis is crossed by the West Valley Fault, which runs roughly north–south through the eastern cities of the region. Philippine geoscience agencies have long warned that a major movement on that fault is a realistic scenario, and planning studies have modelled severe consequences for the older, lower-rise building stock.
Counter-intuitively, the newest supertall towers are among the better-prepared structures in the region. Modern high-rises in BGC and Makati are engineered to the National Structural Code of the Philippines with substantial lateral-force provisions, using reinforced concrete cores, outrigger systems and damping. The greater seismic risk in Metro Manila lies with mid-century mid-rise concrete buildings and informal construction, not with the towers at the top of the height table.
Typhoons impose a second load case. The Philippines is struck by more tropical cyclones than any other country, and wind engineering — including wind-tunnel testing for the tallest towers — is a standard part of the design process rather than an optional extra. The reclamation projects along Manila Bay are the biggest variable in the next decade of the skyline. Large tracts of newly created land have been approved for development, and several of the tallest proposals sit on them. Reclaimed ground is also the least favourable foundation condition in a seismic city, because loose saturated fill is prone to liquefaction, so these towers require deep piling and extensive ground treatment before any height is added.
Manila Beside Bangkok, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur
Among Southeast Asian capitals, Manila's tallest building is respectable but not leading. Kuala Lumpur holds the regional crown by a wide margin with Merdeka 118, which at roughly 679 m is the second-tallest building in the world, and the Petronas Twin Towers at 452 m still rank among the tallest twin structures anywhere. Bangkok's King Power Mahanakhon reaches about 314 m and the Magnolias Waterfront tower slightly exceeds it. Jakarta's Autograph Tower stands at roughly 383 m.
That places Grand Hyatt Manila South Tower in broadly the same tier as Bangkok's tallest and clearly below Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. The comparison is less about engineering capability than about land economics and planning history: Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta both concentrated national ambition into a small number of landmark megaprojects, while Metro Manila's growth dispersed across several independently governed cities, each developing its own core.
Singapore is the instructive outlier in the other direction. Its tallest buildings top out around 290 m, below Manila's leader, because civil aviation height restrictions cap the central business district near 280 m — a reminder that the tallest building in a city reflects regulation at least as much as wealth. Seeing the Skyline
The best vantage points are not at the top of the tallest tower. BGC's High Street and the elevated walkways give close views of the Federal Land cluster; the Makati skyline reads most clearly from across the Pasig River or from the elevated sections of EDSA; and the classic wide view of the whole metropolis is from Manila Bay at sunset, looking east, where the separate business districts resolve into distinct clumps on the horizon rather than one continuous wall.
