About the Currency Quiz

One currency, many countries

You are shown a country and its flag and asked for its currency, with four to choose from. Of the 195 countries in the quiz, 142 have a currency of their own; the rest share one. The euro answers 26 questions, from France and Germany to Montenegro, Kosovo, Andorra and the Vatican. The US dollar is the answer for Panama, Ecuador, El Salvador, Timor-Leste, Palau, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands as well as the United States; the Australian dollar for Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu; the Swiss franc for Liechtenstein. Eight West African countries use the West African CFA franc and six Central African ones the Central African CFA franc.

How the levels run

Easy, Medium and Hard each hold 50 countries and Extreme 45, following the countries’ own difficulty. Each level asks every country once, ten a round, and misses return at the end. On larger screens the side panel shows the country on the map as you answer.

Names worth learning

The hard questions are the currencies with a name all their own: Botswana’s pula, Bhutan’s ngultrum, Mongolia’s tugrik, Zambia’s kwacha, Vietnam’s dong, Guatemala’s quetzal, Peru’s sol, Ghana’s cedi, Ethiopia’s birr, Madagascar’s ariary, Tonga’s pa’anga, Papua New Guinea’s kina and the Maldives’ rufiyaa. Europe’s non-euro countries have their own set: the zloty, forint, koruna, leu, lev, lek and three different kronas.
