The Aso-4 eruption approximately 90,000 years ago was one of the largest volcanic events in Japanese geological history. Pyroclastic flows traveled up to 170 km from the caldera, covering over 20,000 km² and reaching the sea on all sides of Kyushu. The erupted volume exceeded 600 km³ of material.
After the caldera-forming eruptions, volcanic activity continued building the central cones. Historical eruptions of Naka-dake are documented since the 6th century, with major events in 1274, 1485, 1884, 1933, and 1953. The 1953 eruption killed 6 people and injured 90 near the crater.
