The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed and suspension bridge crossing New York's East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn. Opened on 24 May 1883 after thirteen years of construction, its 486-metre main span made it the longest suspension bridge in the world — roughly 50 percent longer than any bridge built before it — and it was the first to use steel wire cables.

The Roebling Family and the Cost of Building It
John Augustus Roebling
The bridge was conceived by John Augustus Roebling, a German-born engineer who had already built successful wire-cable suspension bridges at Niagara and Cincinnati. He never saw construction begin. In 1869, while surveying the tower site, his foot was crushed by an arriving ferry; he contracted tetanus and died weeks later.
Washington Roebling and caisson disease
His son Washington took over as chief engineer at 32. The towers had to be founded on bedrock beneath the riverbed, which meant sinking enormous timber-and-iron caissons — pressurised working chambers — and excavating from inside them. The Manhattan caisson reached about 78 feet below water, the Brooklyn one about 44 feet. Workers emerging from that pressure suffered decompression sickness, then poorly understood and known simply as "caisson disease" or "the bends." Washington Roebling was among the casualties and spent the rest of the project largely confined to his home in Brooklyn Heights, watching progress through a telescope.
Emily Warren Roebling
His wife, Emily Warren Roebling, became the project's effective manager for roughly eleven years. She taught herself cable analysis, stress calculation and construction detailing, relayed her husband's instructions to the site, dealt with contractors and politicians, and defended the Roeblings' continued control of the work before the bridge trustees. She was the first person to cross the finished bridge, riding over with a rooster as a symbol of victory. Her role makes her one of the earliest women to hold real authority on a major engineering project.
At least twenty workers — some accounts say more — died during construction, from caisson disease, falls, and a fire inside the Brooklyn caisson.
Engineering That Explains Its Survival
The Brooklyn Bridge is 140 years old and still carrying traffic, which is unusual for nineteenth-century infrastructure. Two decisions account for it.
The first was deliberate over-design. Roebling specified a structure roughly six times stronger than his calculations required, on the reasoning that a public bridge would be loaded in ways no engineer could predict. The second was redundancy of load path: the bridge combines vertical suspender cables with diagonal stays radiating from the tower tops, producing the distinctive web pattern in every photograph. Either system alone could hold the deck, so the structure is not reliant on a single mechanism.
That margin proved essential, because the bridge was defrauded during construction. A contractor, J. Lloyd Haigh, supplied inferior wire for the main cables, substituting rejected batches after inspection. By the time the fraud was discovered the bad wire was already spun into the cables and could not be removed. Roebling's response was to add roughly 150 extra wires to each cable to compensate — a fix only possible because of the original safety margin.
The towers themselves are limestone, granite and Rosendale cement, with pointed Gothic arches that were as much civic statement as structure. When completed they were the tallest structures in the Western Hemisphere, and for years the bridge dominated the skyline of a city that had not yet built a skyscraper.
Public Trust, Panic and Elephants
Nineteenth-century audiences were not confident about a bridge of this span. Six days after opening, on 30 May 1883, a rumour spread on the crowded promenade that the bridge was collapsing. The resulting stampede on the stairs killed twelve people.
The following year P. T. Barnum offered a demonstration and a publicity stunt in one, marching a column of 21 elephants across the deck — led by Jumbo — to show that the structure could take it. It worked on both counts.
The bridge also gave American English a durable idiom. The con artist George C. Parker repeatedly "sold" the Brooklyn Bridge to newly arrived immigrants, complete with forged deeds, which is the origin of the phrase "if you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you."
How It Compares to Other Great Bridges
The Brooklyn Bridge held the world's longest-span title for two decades. Placing it against later record-holders shows how quickly suspension engineering advanced once steel cables were proven.

- Williamsburg Bridge (1903) — 488 m: Took the record from its neighbour by barely two metres, and did it with steel towers rather than masonry.

- Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (1964) — 1,298 m: Still the longest suspension span in the United States, and also in New York City.
- Akashi Kaikyō Bridge (1998) — 1,991 m: Held the world record for a central span for decades, more than four times the Brooklyn Bridge.
What none of those longer bridges match is the Brooklyn Bridge's dual identity as a piece of infrastructure and a piece of architecture. Walking It Today
The elevated central promenade, set above the traffic lanes rather than beside them, was part of Roebling's original design and remains one of the defining New York experiences. Practical notes:
- The Brooklyn-to-Manhattan direction gives the better views, with the skyline ahead of you.
- The full crossing is a little over a mile and takes 30–40 minutes at a relaxed pace.
- A protected two-way bike lane opened on the bridge in 2021, moving cyclists off the shared promenade and easing serious congestion.
- Early morning is dramatically quieter than midday.
The bridge was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a New York City landmark in 1967. Its Manhattan anchorage once held vaulted chambers rented out as wine cellars, valued for their constant cool temperature; in 2006, workers inspecting the anchorage found a sealed Cold War fallout-shelter cache, complete with medical supplies and water drums.
The Bridge in American Culture
Few structures have been absorbed so thoroughly into a national imagination. The Brooklyn Bridge arrived at the moment when the United States was becoming an industrial power, and it was immediately read as a symbol of that transition rather than merely a river crossing.
Hart Crane made it the centrepiece of his long poem The Bridge (1930), casting the structure as a modern American myth. Walt Whitman, who had written about crossing the same water by ferry in "Crossing Brooklyn Ferry" decades before the bridge existed, lived to see it built. The painter Joseph Stella returned to it repeatedly, and the photographers Walker Evans and Berenice Abbott used its cable geometry to define a visual language for the modern city.
It also changed the political map. Before 1883, Brooklyn was a separate municipality and the third-largest city in the United States in its own right. The bridge bound it physically to Manhattan and made the argument for consolidation almost inevitable; in 1898 Brooklyn was absorbed into the newly formed Greater New York, becoming one of five boroughs. Contemporary opponents of consolidation called the bridge a Trojan horse, and in a narrow sense they were right — infrastructure preceded and enabled the political merger.
One small naming detail persists. The crossing was officially the New York and Brooklyn Bridge for its first decades; "Brooklyn Bridge" began as popular shorthand and was only formally adopted in 1915.
Final Thoughts
The Brooklyn Bridge cost its designer his life, its chief engineer his health, and at least twenty workers theirs — and it was built with cables partly made of fraudulent wire. That it has carried traffic for over 140 years is a testament to a margin of safety chosen precisely because its builder assumed things would go wrong.
