Conservation groups including the Sonoran Institute and Pronatura Noroeste, working alongside the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC), have cleared invasive salt cedar and planted hundreds of thousands of native cottonwoods and willows in dedicated restoration sites.
The threats, however, are growing. Climate change is shrinking the entire Colorado basin's water supply: prolonged drought and rising temperatures have driven Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the two largest reservoirs in the United States, to historic lows. With less water for every existing user, the political space to spare flows for the environment narrows. Rising salinity in the remnant wetlands adds further stress.
