Hampi: India's Ruined Capital of the Vijayanagara Empire

Hampi, the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka, India, was once one of the largest and richest cities in the world during the 14th to 16th centuries.

Hampi, in Karnataka, India, preserves the ruins of Vijayanagara — capital of the last great Hindu empire of South India and, by the early 16th century, one of the largest and richest cities in the world. Sacked in 1565 CE after the Battle of Talikota, it was never reoccupied, leaving over 1,600 surviving structures scattered across a boulder landscape on the Tungabhadra River. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986.

Hampi is unusual among great archaeological sites in that its destruction is precisely dated and its abandonment total. Most ancient cities decayed slowly, were rebuilt over, or shrank into villages. Vijayanagara was systematically demolished over a period of months and then simply left, which is why it functions today as something close to a snapshot of a working medieval South Indian capital at its peak.

The Setting: A City Built in a Boulder Field

Hampi sits at about 467 m elevation in Vijayanagara district, Karnataka, on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra River, on the northern edge of the Deccan Plateau. The landscape is genuinely strange: thousands of rounded granite boulders, some over 10 m high, heaped across low ridges as though scattered deliberately.

The geology behind this is straightforward but slow. The area sits on ancient granite batholiths — masses of igneous rock that cooled at depth within the Earth's crust more than two billion years ago. As overlying rock eroded away, the granite was exposed and the release of pressure caused it to fracture along roughly rectangular joint planes. Tropical weathering then worked on those joints, rounding off corners and edges in a process called spheroidal weathering, until the blocks became the boulders visible today. The Tungabhadra provides the site's other essential ingredient. It forms the northern boundary of the ruins, flowing roughly west to east, and it made a capital possible in an otherwise semi-arid part of the Deccan. The alluvial soil along the banks supported rice, sugarcane and banana cultivation, and still does — one of the most striking things about visiting Hampi is the abrupt transition from bare granite to vivid green paddy within a few metres.

The combination of river and boulders also made the site militarily excellent. The river guarded the north; the boulder ridges provided natural walls that the Vijayanagara engineers linked with masonry into a defensive system said to have comprised seven concentric lines of fortification enclosing a metropolitan area on the order of 650 km².

The Empire That Built It

Vijayanagara — "city of victory" — was founded in 1336 CE by Harihara I and Bukka Raya I, brothers of the Sangama dynasty, as the capital of a state formed in the aftermath of Delhi Sultanate incursions into the Deccan. Over the next two centuries it grew into the dominant power of peninsular India.

The empire peaked under Krishnadevaraya (reigned 1509–1529 CE), controlling most of southern India and drawing revenue from cotton, spices, horses and, above all, diamonds from the Golconda region. Portuguese, Persian and Italian visitors left astonished accounts of the capital. The Persian envoy Abdur Razzaq described a city of bazaars and irrigated gardens; Portuguese travellers such as Domingo Paes and Fernão Nunes recorded diamonds and pearls sold openly by weight in the markets, and estimated a population in the hundreds of thousands — modern scholarship generally puts the peak figure around 500,000, which would have made it comparable to the largest cities anywhere at the time.

The end came quickly. In January 1565 a coalition of Deccan sultanates — Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmadnagar and Bidar — defeated the Vijayanagara army at the Battle of Talikota. The victorious forces then occupied the capital and spent months demolishing temples, palaces and, critically, the irrigation infrastructure. Without its water system the site could not support a large population, and the surviving dynasty relocated south. The city was never rebuilt.

Architecture: Dravidian Temples and Islamic Pavilions

Hampi's architecture is a hybrid, and deliberately so. Religious buildings follow Dravidian temple conventions; secular and courtly buildings borrow freely from the Deccan sultanates to the north, with arches, domes and stucco decoration that would look at home in Bijapur.

The essential monuments:

  • Virupaksha Temple — dedicated to Shiva and in continuous worship since well before the empire was founded, making it one of the oldest functioning temples in India. Its tall eastern gopuram still dominates the Hampi Bazaar approach.
  • Vitthala (Vittala) Temple complex — the high point of Vijayanagara craftsmanship, containing the celebrated stone chariot, actually a shrine carved to resemble a temple car, and the saptasvara pillars that ring with different pitches when struck.
  • Hazara Rama Temple — the royal family's private chapel, its outer walls covered in continuous bas-relief friezes narrating the Ramayana alongside processions of elephants, horses and soldiers.
  • Lotus Mahal — a two-storey pavilion in the zenana enclosure whose lobed arches and pyramidal roofs are the clearest example of the Hindu–Islamic architectural blend.
  • Elephant Stables — eleven domed chambers built for the royal elephants, arranged in a long symmetrical range.
  • Royal enclosure — palace platforms, audience halls, the stepped tank, and the underground Virupaksha temple.
  • Krishna Temple and Lakshmi Narasimha — the latter a monolithic seated Narasimha over 6 m tall, damaged in the sack but still one of the most powerful sculptures at the site.

The water engineering deserves as much attention as the temples. Vijayanagara's planners built aqueducts, canals, sluices, wells and stepped tanks to move water from the Tungabhadra across a rocky, uneven site to feed both the city and its agricultural hinterland. Several channels still carry water. The systematic destruction of this network in 1565 is a large part of why abandonment was permanent.

Hampi vs Angkor: Two Abandoned Capitals Compared

Hampi is often set beside Angkor in Cambodia, and the pairing is genuinely illuminating — two enormous hydraulic capitals of medieval Asia, both abandoned, but for different reasons and with very different outcomes.

  • Scale and date: Angkor peaked earlier, roughly the 9th–15th centuries, and covered a larger area — its greater metropolitan zone extended over something like 1,000 km². Vijayanagara's peak was later and briefer, essentially the 14th–16th centuries.
  • Water strategy: both were hydraulic cities, but Angkor's engineers built vast reservoirs (baray) on flat alluvial ground, while Vijayanagara's threaded canals and tanks through hard granite terrain. Angkor's system appears to have degraded gradually amid climate stress; Vijayanagara's was destroyed deliberately in a single campaign.
  • Cause of abandonment: Angkor's decline was drawn out and multi-causal — shifting trade, religious change, hydraulic failure, drought. Hampi's has a date: 1565.
  • Preservation: Angkor's temples survived because tropical forest covered them; Hampi's survived because there was no forest and nothing was built over them. Angkor's ruins were reclaimed from jungle; Hampi's were simply exposed.
  • Religious continuity: Angkor Wat shifted from Hindu to Buddhist use and remains an active site. At Hampi, the Virupaksha Temple never stopped functioning, so worship there has been continuous through destruction and abandonment alike.

Conservation Pressures on a 40 km² Ruin

Hampi's core monument zone spreads over more than 40 km², with over 1,600 identified structures — a scale that makes conventional site management extremely difficult. The Archaeological Survey of India administers the protected core, working alongside state authorities on the wider landscape.

The main pressures are:

  • Granite quarrying in the surrounding area, which damages the geological setting that gives the site its character and has drawn repeated legal challenges.
  • Agricultural and settlement encroachment onto unprotected parts of the archaeological landscape.
  • Unregulated construction of guesthouses and shops, which prompted UNESCO to place Hampi on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1999 to 2006 following bridge and road construction near the monuments.
  • Displacement of residents — the clearance of Hampi Bazaar's community in 2011 to create a monument buffer zone remains contested, and illustrates the recurring conflict between heritage protection and living settlements.
  • Structural deterioration of exposed carvings and unstable masonry across a site far too large to shelter.

Visiting: Practical Geography

Hampi lies about 13 km from Hospet (Hosapete), the nearest railhead and town of any size, and roughly 350 km north of Bengaluru. Around two million visitors come each year, drawn by an unusual combination of archaeology, architecture and landscape — the boulder terrain has also made Hampi one of India's best-known bouldering destinations, which brings a climbing crowd alongside the history-focused one.

The site rewards being treated as a landscape rather than a monument. The ruins divide roughly into the Sacred Centre near the river, dense with temples and the Hampi Bazaar street; the Royal Centre a few kilometres south, holding the palaces, zenana and stables; and the Islamic Quarter between them. The dry season from October to March is comfortable; April and May regularly exceed 40°C on open granite. Sunrise and sunset from Matanga Hill or Hemakuta Hill give the clearest sense of just how far the city extended — from those vantage points, temple towers are visible in every direction across several kilometres of boulder country.
