Eastern Washington's Columbia Plateau is one of the largest basalt flows on Earth, covering 210,000 square km with lava that erupted from fissures 16-6 million years ago. Individual flows reached 600 km from their source and accumulated over 4,000 meters thick in places. The basalt plateau sits at 300-1,200 meters elevation and is now deeply dissected by the Palouse, Snake, and Columbia Rivers. North Cascades
The North Cascades, sometimes called the "American Alps," contain over 300 glaciers, more than half of all glaciers in the lower 48 states.
