Kilimanjaro: A Free-Standing Mountain With Five Climates

The highest mountain in Africa belongs to no range: it stands alone on a plain, and walking up it takes you from farmland to arctic ice in under a week.

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 metres, in northern Tanzania, and it is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world — it belongs to no range and rises directly from the surrounding plain. Walking from its base to its summit crosses five distinct climate zones in a few days, from cultivated farmland to permanent ice.

A mountain with no range

Almost every great mountain sits in a chain. Kilimanjaro does not. It rises from savanna at around 900 metres to 5,895 in isolation, which is what makes the classic view from Amboseli — elephants on a dry plain with an ice-capped summit behind — possible at all.

It is a volcano, and in fact three: Shira, the oldest, now collapsed and eroded to a plateau; Mawenzi, a jagged eroded peak of about 5,149 metres; and Kibo, the youngest and highest, which carries the summit at Uhuru Peak. Kibo is dormant rather than extinct, with fumaroles in its crater still emitting gas.

The volcanism belongs to the East African Rift, where the continent is slowly pulling apart. That rifting thins the crust and allows magma to reach the surface, producing a line of volcanoes including Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru nearby, and Ol Doinyo Lengai, which erupts a uniquely cold and fluid carbonatite lava.

Five climate zones in under a week

Because the mountain rises so far so fast in the tropics, an ascent compresses a continent's worth of climate into a few days' walk:

  • Cultivation zone (below about 1,800 m) — the volcanic soils of the lower slopes are exceptionally fertile, and the Chagga people have farmed them for centuries, with coffee and banana in intercropped home gardens.
  • Rainforest (to about 2,800 m) — dense, wet montane forest with colobus monkeys and a great deal of mud.
  • Heath and moorland (to about 4,000 m) — giant heathers, and the strange giant groundsels and lobelias found only on East Africa's high mountains.
  • Alpine desert (to about 5,000 m) — almost no vegetation, enormous daily temperature swings, intense ultraviolet radiation.
  • Arctic summit zone — rock, snow and the remaining glaciers.

The forest belt is also the mountain's water tower: it captures moisture and feeds springs supplying a large population on the lower slopes, which makes its condition a practical matter rather than a scenic one.

Where the water goes

Kilimanjaro's forest belt captures a large volume of moisture and releases it through springs on the lower slopes, and that supply supports both the Chagga farming system and the towns below, including Moshi.

Deforestation on the lower slopes has reduced that capture measurably, and the effect on water availability has been more consequential for people living there than the loss of the summit glaciers — which, despite their symbolic weight, contribute very little to the mountain's water balance. The ice is what the world watches; the forest is what the region depends on.

The ice is nearly gone

Kilimanjaro's glaciers have lost the great majority of their area since the first surveys around 1912, and the remaining ice — the Northern Icefield, Furtwängler Glacier and others — is a fraction of what it was, thinning and fragmenting each year.

The causes are more complicated than temperature alone. Reduced precipitation and cloud cover, and consequently more direct solar radiation reaching the ice, appear to be the dominant drivers, with the glaciers losing mass largely by sublimation — passing directly from ice to vapour — rather than by melting. That is why the vertical ice walls retreat rather than the ice simply thinning from above.

The projected disappearance of the summit ice within decades would end a feature that has existed for something on the order of ten thousand years, and would remove one of the few remaining equatorial glacier systems along with those on Mount Kenya and Puncak Jaya.

The plants that grow nowhere else

The moorland zone holds giant groundsels — Dendrosenecio kilimanjari — and giant lobelias, plants that have evolved a peculiar solution to a peculiar problem: at that altitude on the equator, temperatures swing from well above freezing by day to below it every single night, all year round.

Their adaptations are specific to that regime. Dead leaves are retained as an insulating jacket around the stem rather than shed, and lobelias hold water in their central rosette that freezes overnight and protects the growing tip inside. The same forms have evolved independently on Mount Kenya and the Rwenzori, which makes East Africa's high peaks a textbook case of convergent evolution on isolated sky islands.

Walking, not climbing

Kilimanjaro requires no technical mountaineering. There is no rope, no crampon work on the standard routes, and no glacier travel. It is a walk — a long, high, cold walk.

That accessibility is why it attracts something like 30,000 to 50,000 people a year, more than any other mountain of comparable height. Several routes serve it: Marangu, the oldest and the only one with huts; Machame, the most popular; Lemosho and the Northern Circuit, longer and with better acclimatisation profiles; Rongai from the north; and the Umbwe, steep and direct.

Success rates vary sharply by route length, and the reason is acclimatisation. A five-day Marangu ascent gains altitude too fast for many people; an eight- or nine-day Lemosho or Northern Circuit itinerary gives the body time and produces much higher summit rates. The mountain's principal danger is altitude sickness, and it kills a small number of people each year — usually those who ascend too fast and continue despite symptoms.

Tanzanian regulations require every climber to be accompanied by a licensed guide, and the industry employs a very large number of guides, cooks and porters. Porter welfare — load limits, pay, equipment and shelter — has been a persistent concern, and organisations exist specifically to monitor operators on it.

1889, and the name nobody can pin down

The first recorded ascent of Kibo was on 6 October 1889 by the German geographer Hans Meyer and the Austrian mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller, guided by Yohani Kinyala Lauwo, a local Chagga man who reportedly returned to the mountain many times over a very long life.

Meyer named the summit Kaiser-Wilhelm-Spitze. It was renamed Uhuru Peak — freedom peak, in Swahili — when Tanganyika became independent in 1961.

The origin of the name Kilimanjaro is genuinely unresolved. Proposals include Swahili kilima, hill, combined with a Chagga word; a Chagga phrase meaning something like we failed to climb it; and a Maasai term relating to water. No derivation commands agreement, which is unusual for a landmark this prominent.

Mawenzi and Shira, the peaks nobody climbs

Kibo takes essentially all the attention, but Kilimanjaro's other two cones are worth knowing.

Mawenzi, at about 5,149 metres, is the eroded remnant of an older cone, and unlike Kibo it is a genuine technical mountain — steep, loose volcanic rock with serious rockfall, climbed rarely and with a poor safety record. Tanzanian authorities have restricted access to it, and it is not part of any commercial trekking itinerary. Trekkers see it across the saddle from the Kibo routes, jagged and dark against the smooth dome opposite.

Shira is older still and has collapsed entirely, leaving a high plateau on the western side that the Lemosho and Shira routes cross. Walking it gives the clearest sense of the mountain's scale: a broad, open, high-altitude plain that is itself the floor of a vanished volcano.

What the mountain is worth

Kilimanjaro is one of Tanzania's largest single sources of tourism revenue, and the trekking industry around Moshi and Marangu supports a very large number of jobs directly — guides, assistant guides, cooks and porters, with a typical group employing several people per climber.

Park fees are substantial and form a significant contribution to Tanzania National Parks' budget, cross-subsidising conservation elsewhere in the system. The mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage site, inscribed in 1987.

The pressures are the familiar ones of a heavily used protected area: waste along the routes and at camps, firewood demand at lower elevations, erosion on the busiest paths, and the human question of porter conditions on a mountain where loads are carried to 4,600 metres in weather that can turn freezing. Regulation has tightened, with load limits and registration requirements, and the better operators are audited against them — but enforcement across dozens of companies is imperfect.

Kilimanjaro among the Seven Summits

Kilimanjaro is normally the first of the seven that people attempt, and the comparison explains why:

  • No technical skills required, unlike Denali, Vinson or Puncak Jaya.
  • Short duration — under a fortnight including travel, against three weeks or more for Denali.
  • Lower cost than any of the others except perhaps Elbrus.
  • Real altitude — at 5,895 metres it is higher than Elbrus's neighbours and high enough to be genuinely dangerous without acclimatisation.
