Wildlife in Nepal: Tigers, Rhinos and an Extreme Elevation Gradient

Nepal climbs from 59 metres to 8,849 metres in under 200 kilometres, stacking jungle, temperate forest and high desert into a country the size of Bangladesh.

Nepal is home to roughly 208 mammal species, 867 birds, 123 reptiles, 55 amphibians and 651 butterflies, packed into just 0.1% of the world's land area. Its flagship species are the Bengal tiger, which rose to 429 animals in the 2026 national census, the greater one-horned rhinoceros at 752, and the snow leopard, estimated at 397. Around a quarter of the country is protected. The reason so much fits into so little is elevation: Nepal climbs from 59 metres to 8,849 metres in under 200 kilometres.

The gradient that explains everything else

Start with the vertical range, because every other fact follows from it. Nepal's lowest ground sits at about 59 metres above sea level in the southeastern Terai. Its highest is the summit of Everest at 8,849 metres. The horizontal distance between them is less than 200 kilometres.

Compressing that much altitude into that little ground stacks climate zones on top of each other. In a single north-south transect you pass through subtropical sal forest and tall grassland, then subtropical and temperate broadleaf, then conifer and rhododendron, then alpine scrub, then the trans-Himalayan cold desert of Mustang and Dolpo in the rain shadow, and finally permanent ice.

Each of those belts carries its own fauna, which is why a country roughly the size of Bangladesh hosts tigers and rhinos at one end and snow leopards and blue sheep at the other.

Nepal also sits on a biogeographic seam. The Palearctic realm to the north and the Indomalayan realm to the south meet along the Himalaya, so species assemblages that would normally be separated by thousands of kilometres end up adjacent, and the transition zone between them holds animals found in neither in quantity. Two of the world's biodiversity hotspots — the Himalaya and, at the eastern margin, Indo-Burma — overlap on Nepali territory. The country holds about 0.1% of global land area and something on the order of 3% of the world's known flowering plants.

The tiger count that more than tripled

Nepal's tiger recovery is the most-cited conservation result in South Asia, and the numbers hold up.

The national census stood at 121 tigers in 2009. By 2022 it had reached 355, meeting the international TX2 goal of doubling wild tiger numbers ahead of schedule. The most recent count, announced on Global Tiger Day in July 2026 by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, put the population at 429.

The distribution across the lowland parks:

  • Chitwan — 145 tigers, the largest single population.
  • Bardiya — 112, and the only park to fall, down from 125.
  • Parsa — 71, up sharply from 41 and the biggest gain in the survey.
  • Banke — 51.
  • Shuklaphanta — 50.

Bardiya's decline against a rising national total is the more interesting number. It suggests the lowland parks are approaching the density their prey base and territory can support, which shifts the conservation problem from growing the population to managing where tigers go next — usually into the corridors and buffer zones where people live.

Rhinos, and the run of zero-poaching years

The greater one-horned rhinoceros fell to around 100 animals in Nepal in the 1960s. The 2021 count recorded 752, the large majority of them in Chitwan.

What made the difference was less habitat than enforcement. Nepal recorded a series of years in which not a single rhino was poached — an outcome achieved by combining army-staffed park protection with community-based anti-poaching units and buffer-zone programmes that route a share of park revenue back to neighbouring villages. The species remains vulnerable, and floods on the Rapti and Narayani rivers now kill more rhinos in some years than poachers do.

What lives above the tree line

The high country holds the species most people associate with the Himalaya and almost nobody sees.

Nepal published its first consolidated national snow leopard estimate in 2025, synthesising surveys run between 2015 and 2024 across seven regions: 397 animals, at a mean density of about 1.56 per 100 km². The striking part is the ratio — Nepal holds around 2% of global snow leopard habitat but close to 10% of the world population, the fourth-largest of any country.

The red panda occupies the temperate bamboo understorey between roughly 2,200 and 4,800 metres. Government estimates in 2011 put the population at 300 to 600; the Red Panda Network now estimates 500 to 1,000, with much of the work done through community forest guardians rather than inside national parks.

Also up here: the Himalayan tahr, blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, and the Himalayan monal — the danphe, Nepal's national bird, an iridescent pheasant that is far easier to spot than anything else on this list.

How much of the country is protected, and how it is organised

Nepal's protected-area network covers close to a quarter of its land: 12 national parks, one wildlife reserve, one hunting reserve, six conservation areas and a set of buffer zones around them.

The system is deliberately spread across the elevation gradient rather than concentrated in scenery. Chitwan, established in 1973 and a World Heritage Site since 1984, protects lowland sal forest and grassland — the tiger and rhino core. Bardiya and Shuklaphanta extend that westward. Sagarmatha, gazetted in 1976, covers the Everest massif. Shey Phoksundo in the northwest is the largest national park; the Annapurna Conservation Area is the largest protected area of any kind and pioneered a model in which local committees, not central government, run conservation and keep a share of tourist fees.

Corridors, and why parks alone were never going to work

Nepal's lowland parks are not large enough on their own to hold viable populations of wide-ranging animals indefinitely, and they are separated by farmland, highways and towns. The response has been to manage the gaps rather than only the reserves.

The Terai Arc Landscape is the main vehicle: a conservation programme spanning roughly 800 kilometres of lowland from Nepal's Bagmati river west into India, designed to keep forest corridors open between Chitwan, Parsa, Banke, Bardiya, Shuklaphanta and their Indian counterparts. Restoring the Khata and Basanta corridors gave tigers and elephants a route between Bardiya and Katarniaghat across the border, and genetic evidence suggests animals do use them.

This is why Parsa's jump from 41 tigers to 71 is more meaningful than a single park's statistic. Parsa adjoins Chitwan, and a population growing there is what connectivity is supposed to produce — surplus animals from a saturated core finding territory next door rather than dying in farmland.

The rivers, and the species almost nobody counts

Nepal's aquatic fauna gets far less attention than its cats and rhinos, and it is in worse shape.

The gharial, a fish-eating crocodilian with a distinctively narrow snout, is critically endangered globally, with Nepal's population in the Rapti, Narayani and Karnali river systems supported by a breeding centre at Chitwan that releases juveniles into the wild. Survival after release has been the persistent problem.

The Ganges river dolphin — blind, echolocating, and Nepal's rarest large mammal — survives in only a handful of lowland river stretches, with counts in the low tens. Its threats are structural rather than criminal: barrages and irrigation diversions cut river reaches into segments too short to support a population, and dry-season abstraction leaves too little water. There are around 230 freshwater fish species, and the same fragmentation affects the migratory ones.

The pattern is worth stating plainly, because it complicates the success story: Nepal's terrestrial megafauna has recovered strongly under protection and enforcement, while its river species have kept declining, because the thing harming them is water management rather than poaching.

The birds, which are the real headline

Nepal's bird list runs to roughly 867 species — close to 9% of the world's total in 0.1% of its land area.

Two things drive that. The first is the same elevation stacking that governs the mammals. The second is that Nepal sits on a major migratory route: bar-headed geese cross the Himalaya on their way between Central Asia and the Indian plains, flying at altitudes that remain physiologically remarkable. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in the east, a Ramsar wetland on the Sapta Koshi floodplain, is the country's densest birding site.

Nepal has also had one of Asia's more successful vulture recoveries, after diclofenac — a veterinary anti-inflammatory lethal to birds that feed on treated carcasses — collapsed populations across the subcontinent. Nepal banned it and set up "vulture safe zones" with community-run feeding stations, and several species have begun to stabilise.

What the counts do not show

Rising numbers create their own problems. As tiger, rhino and elephant populations recover into a landscape with 29.6 million people in it, human-wildlife conflict has become the central management issue — crop raiding, livestock loss and, in the worst cases, deaths on both sides. Compensation schemes exist but are slow.

Climate change is the other pressure, and it acts hardest exactly where Nepal's biodiversity is most specialised. Species adapted to narrow altitudinal bands respond to warming by shifting upslope, and on a mountain that eventually means running out of mountain. Glacial retreat and the growth of glacial lakes add a hazard that has no conservation fix.
