Manaslu: The Mountain of the Spirit, and of Avalanches

The eighth-highest mountain on Earth has become a commercial favourite — and its avalanche history is a reminder that accessible does not mean safe.

Manaslu is the eighth-highest mountain in the world at 8,163 metres, in the Mansiri Himal of west-central Nepal. Its name comes from the Sanskrit manasa, meaning intellect or soul, and is usually rendered as mountain of the spirit — and it has become, in the last two decades, one of the most commercially climbed 8,000-metre peaks.

Japan's mountain

Manaslu occupies a place in Japanese mountaineering comparable to Everest's in British or Annapurna's in French. Japanese expeditions attempted it repeatedly through the 1950s, and it was first climbed on 9 May 1956 by Toshio Imanishi and the Sherpa Gyalzen Norbu, on an expedition led by Yuko Maki.

The relationship became strained. After a 1954 expedition, villagers in Sama attributed a series of misfortunes — including an avalanche that destroyed a monastery and killed people — to the foreigners having angered the mountain's deity, and the 1954 party was turned back by local opposition. The Japanese returned in 1956 having made substantial payments toward rebuilding the monastery, and the ascent proceeded.

The episode is one of the clearer early instances of a Himalayan community exercising a veto over climbing on a mountain it regarded as sacred, and of the compensation arrangements that became normal afterwards.

Why it has become so popular

Manaslu now sees very large numbers of permits each autumn, and several factors converged to produce that:

  • Access. The approach is comparatively short by 8,000er standards, and a road has been pushed a long way up the Budhi Gandaki valley, shortening it further.
  • Route. The standard north-east face route has no sustained technical climbing, so it suits guided clients.
  • Season. It is climbed in autumn, which complements the spring Everest season for guides and clients working through a programme.
  • Qualification. As permit rules and operator practice have increasingly demanded prior 8,000-metre experience for Everest, Manaslu has taken the role Cho Oyu played when Tibet was more freely accessible.

The crowding brings the same problems seen on Everest: queues at fixed ropes, waste accumulation, and a proportion of clients on the mountain with limited independent capability.

Samagaon, and the people under the mountain

Base camp is reached from Samagaon, a Nubri village at around 3,500 metres whose inhabitants are of Tibetan descent and speak a Tibetan dialect rather than Nepali as a first language. The village has a gompa, a summer yak-herding economy, and — since the mountain became popular — a substantial seasonal income from expeditions.

That income is genuinely transformative and genuinely precarious. It arrives in a two-month window, it depends on permit numbers set in Kathmandu and on the willingness of foreign clients to travel, and it collapsed entirely after the 2015 earthquake and again during the pandemic. Villages under popular mountains are exposed to a global market in a way that villages one valley over are not.

The avalanche record

What the accessible route conceals is that Manaslu has one of the worse avalanche histories among the 8,000ers.

The upper mountain carries large snow slopes and serac barriers above the standard camps, and the autumn season — following monsoon snowfall — loads them. In September 2012 an avalanche released above Camp 3 and swept through tents in the early morning, killing eleven climbers in one of the deadliest single incidents in Himalayan mountaineering. Further fatal avalanches have occurred since, including a serac collapse in 2022.

The pattern matters because the mountain's reputation as a straightforward 8,000er attracts precisely the climbers least equipped to evaluate snowpack risk for themselves, and because the concentration of camps in avalanche-exposed terrain turns a single release into a mass-casualty event rather than an individual accident.

The summit that many people did not reach

Manaslu's true summit is a narrow, corniced fin of snow at the end of a broad summit plateau, and reaching it involves crossing exposed ground where a fall would be unsurvivable.

For years, a large proportion of climbers stopped at a foresummit — a rounded high point on the plateau some way short of the true top — and recorded a successful ascent. Analysis of summit photographs from the 2010s and early 2020s indicated the practice was widespread, and the resulting recount stripped many claimed ascents, with consequences for climbers pursuing the fourteen 8,000ers.

Guiding operators have since made the true summit an explicit objective and fixed rope to it, which has improved the accuracy of claims and also increased the risk, since the final fin is the most dangerous ground on the mountain. It is the same problem Cho Oyu has with its plateau, sharpened by a narrower and more exposed finish.

What the fatality figures actually say

Manaslu's overall death rate per summit is low by 8,000-metre standards — comfortably below Dhaulagiri's, and a small fraction of Annapurna's — and operators reasonably cite that.

The figure conceals its shape. Deaths on Manaslu are not spread evenly across many years as individual accidents; they cluster in a small number of avalanche events that kill many people at once. A mountain that is safe in most seasons and catastrophic in a few produces a reassuring average and an unreliable one, because the risk a given climber faces is not the average but the chance of being present when a slope releases.

That distinction — between a hazard that is continuous and one that is rare but mass-casualty — is the single most useful thing to understand about the mountain, and it is not communicated by a route grade.

The circuit and the valley below

The Manaslu Circuit trek runs up the Budhi Gandaki valley, crosses the Larkya La at about 5,100 metres, and descends into the Marsyangdi to join the Annapurna Circuit. It is a restricted area requiring permits and a registered guide, which has limited the numbers and kept it noticeably quieter than the Annapurna and Everest routes.

The upper valley — Nubri and Tsum — is culturally Tibetan, with gompas, mani walls and communities whose ties historically ran north across the border rather than south to Kathmandu. Tsum in particular was closed to outsiders until 2008 and retains a strong monastic tradition, including a longstanding local prohibition on hunting and slaughter.

The 2015 earthquake hit this region hard. Langtang, one valley east, suffered a catastrophic landslide that destroyed a village, and Manaslu's valleys sustained severe damage to trails, bridges and settlements, with the trekking economy taking years to recover.

The route, camp by camp

The standard line runs up the north-east face from a base camp at around 4,800 metres, above the village of Samagaon in the Nubri valley.

Above base camp the route crosses a glacier with substantial crevasse hazard to Camp 1 at roughly 5,700 metres, then climbs an icefall section to Camp 2 near 6,400. Camp 3 sits around 6,800 metres and Camp 4 near 7,400, from which summit day involves a long ascent of the upper slopes to the plateau and then the final fin.

Nothing on that sequence is technically hard by alpine standards. What it involves is a great deal of glacier travel beneath serac barriers, which is precisely the exposure that produced the 2012 disaster, and a summit day that is long even by 8,000-metre standards. Fixed rope is installed on most of the route by a rope-fixing team early in the season, and the great majority of clients use supplementary oxygen from Camp 2 or 3 upward.

The Mansiri Himal, and how it was mapped late

Manaslu heads the Mansiri Himal, a compact group also containing Himalchuli at about 7,893 metres and Ngadi Chuli around 7,871 — both substantial mountains that are barely known outside specialist circles.

The region was surveyed comparatively late. Nepal was closed to outsiders until 1950, so while Everest and Kangchenjunga had been measured from India in the nineteenth century, the interior ranges were mapped in detail only in the decades afterward. British reconnaissance under H. W. Tilman reached the Manaslu area in 1950, and the Japanese surveys of the mid-1950s produced the first thorough account of its approaches.

That lateness is part of why Manaslu's climbing history begins in 1956 rather than in the 1920s, and why its first ascent belongs to Japan rather than to the European powers that had dominated Himalayan exploration in the interwar years.

Where it sits on the list

Among the fourteen 8,000-metre peaks Manaslu occupies an odd position. It is high enough to be a serious objective, accessible enough to be commercially viable, and dangerous in a way that its route grade does not communicate.

Compared with Annapurna — 70 km to the south-west and the most lethal of the fourteen by fatality rate — Manaslu is far safer per attempt. Compared with Cho Oyu it is meaningfully less so. It has become the mountain where a great many people acquire their first experience above 8,000 metres, which makes its snow conditions a matter of consequence for the sport as a whole rather than only for the parties on it.
