How Tornadoes Form

A funnel cloud descends from the storm base, and when it touches the ground, it becomes a tornado. The entire process can happen in minutes, giving little warning time. Most tornadoes last only a few minutes, but some persist for over an hour, traveling tens of kilometers and leaving a continuous path of destruction.

These extreme tornadoes can level entire neighborhoods, turn cars into airborne projectiles, and strip asphalt from roadways.

Tornado strength is rated after the fact by surveying the damage — there is no way to measure winds directly inside most tornadoes. Doppler radar can detect rotation within thunderstorms, providing crucial minutes of warning before a tornado strikes.
