The top 10 rice-producing countries are China, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, Brazil and Japan. China is the largest producer, and together China and India grow more than half of the world's rice, roughly 700 million tonnes each year worldwide.
Introduction
Rice is the staple food for more than half of humanity and the single most important source of calories for billions of people across Asia, Africa and Latin America. Global production sits at around 500 to 520 million tonnes of milled rice each year, equivalent to roughly 750 to 780 million tonnes of unmilled paddy rice.
Production is overwhelmingly concentrated in Asia, where the warm, wet climate and river deltas are ideal for flooded paddy cultivation. The list below ranks the ten largest producers and explains what makes each an agricultural powerhouse.
The Top 10 Rice-Producing Countries
1. China
- China: The world's largest rice producer, growing roughly 200 million tonnes of paddy rice a year, about a quarter of the global total. Rice is a dietary cornerstone, and intensive cultivation in the Yangtze and Pearl River basins, supported by hybrid rice varieties pioneered by scientist Yuan Longping, feeds its enormous population.
2. India
- India: The second-largest producer, with around 190 million tonnes of paddy annually, and the world's biggest rice exporter. The Ganges plain, West Bengal and Punjab are the main growing regions. Together, China and India account for well over half of all rice grown on Earth.
3. Indonesia
- Indonesia: The largest producer in Southeast Asia, harvesting around 54 million tonnes of paddy. Java's fertile volcanic soils support multiple harvests per year, and rice is central to Indonesian food security across its thousands of islands.
4. Bangladesh
- Bangladesh: Produces roughly 55 million tonnes of paddy on the fertile Ganges-Brahmaputra delta. Despite its small size, it is one of the most rice-dependent countries in the world, with three distinct growing seasons named Aus, Aman and Boro.
5. Vietnam
- Vietnam: Grows around 43 million tonnes of paddy, much of it in the Mekong Delta, often called the country's rice bowl. Vietnam is consistently among the top three rice exporters globally, shipping to markets across Asia and Africa.
6. Thailand
- Thailand: Produces about 33 million tonnes of paddy and is a perennial top exporter, famous worldwide for fragrant jasmine (hom mali) rice. The central plains around the Chao Phraya River form the heart of Thai rice farming.
7. Myanmar
- Myanmar: Harvests roughly 25 million tonnes of paddy, largely in the Irrawaddy Delta. Once the world's leading rice exporter in the early 20th century, it remains a significant producer in Southeast Asia.
8. Philippines
- Philippines: Produces around 20 million tonnes of paddy but is also a major importer, as domestic output does not fully meet demand. The country hosts the International Rice Research Institute, a global center for rice science.
9. Brazil
- Brazil: The largest rice producer outside Asia, with around 10 to 11 million tonnes of paddy, mostly grown in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. Rice and beans are a staple pairing throughout Brazilian cuisine.
10. Japan
- Japan: Grows roughly 10 million tonnes of paddy of prized short-grain japonica rice. Though production has gradually declined, rice remains deeply woven into Japanese culture, from sushi to sake to religious ceremony.
Rice Production Versus Exports
It is important to distinguish production from export. The biggest producers, China and India, grow enormous quantities largely to feed their own huge populations. China actually imports rice in some years despite being the top grower. On the export side, India, Thailand and Vietnam are the global leaders, supplying much of the rice traded internationally, followed by Pakistan and the United States.
Asia accounts for roughly 90% of both world rice production and consumption. This concentration makes global rice supplies sensitive to monsoon patterns, and export bans in a single large producer can send prices climbing worldwide.
Good to Know
Which country produces the most rice in the world?
China produces the most rice, growing roughly 200 million tonnes of paddy rice a year, about a quarter of the global total. India is a close second, and together the two nations grow more than half of all the world's rice.
Which country exports the most rice?
India is the world's largest rice exporter, followed by Thailand and Vietnam. Although China and India grow the most rice overall, much of their harvest feeds domestic populations, so export rankings look different from production rankings.
Why is rice production concentrated in Asia?
Asia's warm, humid climate, abundant monsoon rainfall and large river deltas create ideal conditions for flooded paddy cultivation. Rice has been a dietary staple across the continent for thousands of years, so both agriculture and cuisine are built around it.
