The Greenland Ice Sheet is the world's second-largest body of ice, covering 1.71 million square kilometers and containing enough frozen water to raise global sea levels by 7.4 meters if fully melted.

Greenland is the largest island in the world — 2.16 million square kilometres, larger than the next three biggest islands (New Guinea, Borneo, and Madagascar) combined. About 80 percent of its surface is covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet, which is the second-largest contiguous ice mass on Earth after the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The ice sheet averages 1,500 metres thick and reaches over 3,000 metres at its centre, containing approximately 2.85 million cubic kilometres of ice — enough water that complete melting would raise global sea level by approximately 7.4 metres. The human population is approximately 56,000, almost all of them living on the ice-free coastal margins, with the largest settlement being the capital Nuuk (population around 19,500). Greenland is constitutionally an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark, with full responsibility for most domestic affairs and a Danish role in foreign policy and defence. The island sits at the geographic, political, and climatological intersection of several major global stories — and its political and physical future is increasingly central to a number of those stories.

How Big Is It?

Greenland's size is genuinely difficult to visualise from typical world maps, because the Mercator projection that dominates most map presentations grossly exaggerates polar landmasses. On a Mercator map, Greenland often appears comparable in size to Africa; in reality, Africa is approximately 14 times larger. Greenland is, however, genuinely vast: it spans approximately 2,670 kilometres from north to south and approximately 1,300 kilometres east to west at its widest point. The northernmost point, Cape Morris Jesup, is at approximately 83°40' N — less than 750 kilometres from the North Pole and the northernmost point of land in the world (excluding a few transient ice formations). The southernmost point, Cape Farewell, is at approximately 59°46' N, comparable in latitude to southern Norway or central Scotland.

The Ice Sheet

The Greenland Ice Sheet covers approximately 1.71 million square kilometres of the island's interior. It is the second-largest ice mass in the world after the Antarctic Ice Sheet. The ice has accumulated over approximately the past 2.6 million years through repeated glacial cycles, with substantial portions of the current ice sheet dating from over 100,000 years ago. The ice sheet rests on a complex topography of mountains, valleys, and low-lying interior basins; if the ice were entirely removed, the underlying bedrock would partially be below sea level (forming substantial inland seas) and partially elevated mountains and plateau. The interior of the ice sheet is one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth — winter temperatures regularly below -50°C, sustained winds, no liquid water, and no biological productivity. The few research stations that operate in the interior (Summit Station, the major American facility at approximately 3,200 metres elevation in the central ice sheet) operate under conditions comparable to high Antarctic stations.

The Mass Loss

The Greenland Ice Sheet has been losing mass at accelerating rates since at least the 1990s. The current annual mass loss is approximately 270-300 gigatonnes per year, with substantial year-to-year variability and a long-term acceleration trend. The mass loss is driven by two principal processes: surface melt (warm summer temperatures producing meltwater that runs off the ice sheet) and ice discharge through outlet glaciers (where the ice sheet feeds large valley glaciers that calve icebergs into the surrounding ocean). The relative contribution of these two processes has been shifting; surface melt was a larger fraction of total mass loss during the warm summers of the 2010s, while ice discharge has been a more variable but substantial component throughout. The 2012 summer saw a particularly extreme melt event with nearly the entire ice sheet surface experiencing some melt over a few days. The 2019 summer saw substantial melt across the western and northern portions. Each unusually warm summer is no longer unusual in any meaningful sense.

The Sea Level Implications

If the Greenland Ice Sheet melted completely, global sea level would rise approximately 7.4 metres. Complete melting is not expected within any human-relevant timescale — the ice sheet would require thousands of years to melt entirely even under extreme warming scenarios. The more immediate concern is the rate of contribution to sea level rise over the coming decades. Current Greenland mass loss contributes approximately 0.7-0.8 millimetres per year to global sea level, which is about 20-25 percent of the total observed sea level rise. The rate is accelerating, and scientific projections suggest that Greenland's contribution could grow to several millimetres per year by the late 21st century under most climate scenarios. The implications for coastal populations and infrastructure globally — particularly for low-lying coastal areas in places like Bangladesh, Vietnam, the Netherlands, Florida, and the small island states of the Pacific — are central concerns in modern climate adaptation planning.

The People

Greenland's human population is approximately 56,000, predominantly Inuit (Kalaallit) Greenlanders who make up about 88 percent of the population. The remaining population is mostly Danish, with smaller numbers from other countries. The Kalaallit are descended from migration waves out of the Canadian Arctic that arrived in northern and western Greenland between approximately 1200 and 1500 CE. Earlier Indigenous cultures — the Saqqaq, Independence I and II, Dorset — had occupied parts of Greenland from approximately 2500 BCE onwards but had disappeared from the island by the time of the Kalaallit arrival. Norse settlers from Iceland established colonies on the southwestern coast from approximately 985 CE under Erik the Red, persisted for approximately 500 years, and then disappeared in the early 15th century for reasons that are still being debated (likely some combination of climate cooling, conflict with the Kalaallit, economic isolation, and other pressures). The modern Greenlandic settlements were established after Danish colonisation began in 1721.

The Political Status

Greenland's political relationship with Denmark has evolved substantially over time. Greenland was formally a Danish colony until 1953, then became an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark, then received Home Rule in 1979 and an enhanced Self-Government Act in 2009. Under current arrangements, Greenland is responsible for its own internal affairs including health, education, social services, taxation, the administration of mineral and other resources, and most aspects of justice and economy. Denmark retains responsibility for foreign affairs, defence, monetary policy (the Danish krone is the currency), and certain elements of the legal system. Greenland is not part of the European Union (Greenland left in 1985, the only territory ever to leave the EU). The country has substantial autonomy and could in principle move toward full independence, though the practical economic basis for independence remains a major challenge — Greenland's budget depends substantially on annual transfers from Denmark.

The Mineral Question

One of the most consequential ongoing questions for Greenland is the development of its mineral resources. The retreating ice sheet has exposed substantial mineral deposits, and the Greenland government has been increasingly active in licensing exploration and development. Significant deposits of rare earth elements (particularly at Kvanefjeld in southern Greenland), uranium, lead, zinc, gold, and other minerals have been documented. The Greenland government's position on mineral development has shifted over recent elections, with the 2021 election bringing to power a party that had campaigned against uranium and rare earth development at Kvanefjeld. The mineral development question is tied to the independence question — substantial mineral revenues could in principle replace the Danish block grant and make full independence economically feasible — and to geopolitical questions about Chinese and other foreign involvement in Greenland's resource sector. The US and EU have both expressed strong interest in Greenland's critical minerals as part of their respective supply-chain security efforts.

The US Interest

Greenland has been of substantial American strategic interest for over a century. The US established military facilities on the island during the Second World War (under the 1941 US-Danish agreement signed by the Danish ambassador in Washington while Denmark itself was under German occupation). The Thule Air Base (renamed Pituffik Space Base in 2023), in northwestern Greenland, became a major US strategic facility during the Cold War — initially for long-range bombers, later for ballistic missile early warning radar. The US has, on multiple occasions, expressed interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark — including offers in 1867, 1946, and most prominently in 2019 when President Trump's expressed interest in purchase produced a substantial diplomatic incident with Denmark. The Greenlandic and Danish governments have consistently rejected such proposals, but the strategic importance of Greenland to Arctic security has continued to draw American attention. The post-2022 reconfiguration of Arctic security relationships following the Russian invasion of Ukraine has produced additional Western military engagement with Greenland.

The Future

Greenland's next several decades will be shaped by the interaction of climate change, mineral development, political evolution toward greater autonomy or independence, and the strategic competition between the US, China, Russia, and the European Union for influence in the Arctic. The ice sheet will continue retreating; the question is at what rate. The mineral economy will continue developing; the question is which deposits, with which foreign partners, under what regulatory and environmental conditions. The political relationship with Denmark will continue evolving; full independence remains a long-term aspiration of much of Greenlandic politics but the economic basis for it is not yet established. The 56,000 Greenlanders themselves will continue to be the determining factor in how these forces play out, and the major decisions of the next few decades will be theirs to make. Greenland is, in this sense, one of the more interesting test cases for what happens when a small Indigenous-majority autonomous territory finds itself at the centre of multiple converging global forces simultaneously.
