The pampero, a cold wind from the south, influences local weather patterns and can push lagoon water levels up rapidly.

Outside of the Ramsar-designated Samborombón Bay and the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve at Mar Chiquita, the thousands of lagunas and marshes scattered across the Flooding Pampa have no legal protection. Agrochemical runoff from soybean and corn fields has increased nutrient and pesticide loads in laguna waters, causing algal blooms and degrading water quality for wildlife.
