The rock cycle for kids: The rock cycle is the process where rocks slowly change from one type to another over millions of years. There are three types of rocks: igneous (made from cooled lava), sedimentary (made from layers of squished material), and metamorphic (changed by heat and pressure). Every rock on Earth is part of this never-ending cycle!

The 3 Types of Rocks

  • Igneous Rocks: Form when hot melted rock (magma or lava) cools and hardens. Examples: granite, obsidian, basalt
  • Sedimentary Rocks: Form when tiny pieces of rock, sand, or shells pile up in layers and get pressed together over time. Examples: sandstone, limestone, shale
  • Metamorphic Rocks: Form when existing rocks are changed by extreme heat and pressure underground. Examples: marble (was limestone), slate (was shale), quartzite (was sandstone)

How Does the Cycle Work?

Any type of rock can become any other type. Igneous rock can be worn down by wind and water into tiny pieces that become sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rock can be pushed deep underground where heat and pressure turn it into metamorphic rock. And any rock that melts and cools becomes igneous rock again!

The rock cycle has no beginning or end — it just keeps going. Some rocks complete the cycle in a few million years, while others take billions of years.

Make edible rock cycle treats! Crush some candy bars into small pieces (erosion). Press the pieces together firmly (sedimentary rock). Wrap them in foil and press hard with a book (metamorphic rock). You can also melt chocolate and let it cool to make "igneous rock"!
