Recent LiDAR scanning of the Guatemalan jungle has revealed that the Maya landscape was far more urbanized than previously believed. A 2018 survey found over 60,000 previously unknown structures under the jungle canopy, including highways, fortifications, and interconnected cities — suggesting a total Classic Period population well above earlier estimates.

Collapse and Survival

The Classic Maya "collapse" (c. 800–1000 CE) was not a single event but a prolonged decline of the southern lowland cities. Leading theories include: severe droughts (confirmed by speleothem and lake sediment data showing multi-decade droughts between 800–1000 CE), deforestation that reduced rainfall, soil exhaustion from intensive agriculture, and escalating warfare between competing city-states.

Crucially, the Maya did not disappear. Northern cities like Chichen Itza and Uxmal thrived after the southern collapse, and Maya civilization continued until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century.
