The Seven Natural Wonders of the World represent the most spectacular and awe-inspiring creations of nature on our planet. Unlike their man-made counterparts, these wonders were shaped by geological forces, biological processes, and atmospheric phenomena over millions of years. The traditional list includes the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, the Harbor of Rio de Janeiro, Mount Everest, the Aurora Borealis, Paricutin Volcano, and Victoria Falls, though various organizations have proposed alternative lists that include other remarkable natural sites.
Grand Canyon, United States
The Grand Canyon in Arizona, United States, is one of the most spectacular geological formations on Earth. Carved by the Colorado River over a period of 5 to 6 million years, the canyon stretches 446 kilometers (277 miles) long, up to 29 kilometers (18 miles) wide, and plunges to a depth of over 1,800 meters (6,000 feet). Its exposed rock layers span nearly 2 billion years of Earth's geological history, making it one of the most complete geological records visible anywhere on the planet.
The canyon's layered bands of colorful rock reveal a remarkable cross-section of Earth's crust. The oldest visible rocks, the Vishnu Basement Rocks at the bottom of the Inner Gorge, date to approximately 1.8 billion years ago, while the youngest layers on the rim are around 270 million years old. Between these extremes lie layers of sandstone, limestone, and shale that record ancient seas, deserts, mountains, and river deltas that once covered this region.
The Grand Canyon is home to approximately 2,600 plant species, 450 bird species, 90 mammal species, and 58 reptile and amphibian species. The Colorado River running through the canyon supports a unique aquatic ecosystem that includes several endangered species. The canyon receives approximately 6 million visitors annually and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
Great Barrier Reef, Australia
The Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia, is the largest coral reef system in the world and the largest living structure on Earth. Stretching over 2,300 kilometers (1,430 miles) along Australia's northeastern coast, it comprises approximately 2,900 individual reef systems, 900 islands, and covers an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometers (133,000 square miles), roughly the size of Japan.
The reef supports an astonishing diversity of life: over 1,500 species of fish, 400 species of coral, 4,000 species of mollusk, 240 species of birds, and 30 species of whales and dolphins. It is also home to six of the world's seven species of marine turtle and one of the world's most important dugong habitats. The reef generates approximately AUD $6.4 billion annually in tourism revenue and supports over 64,000 jobs.
Despite its immense size, the Great Barrier Reef faces significant threats from climate change, coral bleaching, ocean acidification, and crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks. Major bleaching events in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2022 caused widespread coral death, with some sections losing up to 90% of their coral cover. The reef was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, and massive conservation efforts are underway to protect what remains.
Victoria Falls, Zambia/Zimbabwe
Victoria Falls, located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, is the largest sheet of falling water in the world. The Zambezi River plunges over a basalt cliff 1,708 meters (5,604 feet) wide and 108 meters (354 feet) high, creating a curtain of water so vast that the resulting mist can be seen from over 50 kilometers away. The indigenous Tonga people named it Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning "The Smoke That Thunders."
During peak flood season (February to May), the falls discharge approximately 500 million liters (132 million gallons) of water per minute. The spray from the falls creates a perpetual "rain forest" of tropical vegetation on the opposite cliff face, where rainfall from the mist can reach 2,500 millimeters per year. The gorge below the falls extends for approximately 100 kilometers and contains a series of rapids rated as some of the most challenging white-water courses in the world.
Scottish explorer David Livingstone became the first European to view the falls on November 16, 1855, and named them after Queen Victoria. The falls and surrounding area were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989. Victoria Falls is neither the tallest nor the widest waterfall in the world, but its combined width and height give it the largest sheet of falling water, with a flow rate roughly twice that of Niagara Falls.
Mount Everest, Nepal/China
Mount Everest, standing at 8,849 meters (29,032 feet) above sea level, is the highest mountain on Earth. Located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, Everest is known as Sagarmatha in Nepali ("Goddess of the Sky") and Chomolungma in Tibetan ("Goddess Mother of the World").
The mountain was formed approximately 50-60 million years ago when the Indian tectonic plate collided with the Eurasian plate, and it continues to rise at a rate of approximately 4 millimeters per year. The summit sits in the "death zone" above 8,000 meters, where atmospheric pressure is only about one-third of sea-level pressure, oxygen levels are insufficient to sustain human life for extended periods, and temperatures can drop below -60°C (-76°F).
The first confirmed summit of Everest was achieved by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay on May 29, 1953. Since then, over 6,000 people have reached the summit, while more than 310 have died attempting the climb. The mountain has become increasingly commercialized, with guided expeditions costing between $30,000 and $100,000. The Everest region, including Sagarmatha National Park, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)
The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, is a natural light display predominantly seen in high-latitude regions near the Arctic. The phenomenon occurs when charged particles from the sun (solar wind) interact with gases in Earth's magnetosphere and upper atmosphere. When these energized particles collide with oxygen and nitrogen molecules, they excite the atoms, causing them to emit photons of light in spectacular colors.
The colors of the aurora depend on which gas molecules are excited and at what altitude. Green, the most common color, is produced by oxygen molecules at altitudes of 100-300 kilometers. Red auroras come from high-altitude oxygen (above 300 km), while blue and purple hues are caused by nitrogen molecules. In rare cases, all colors combine to create a spectacular multi-colored display spanning the entire visible sky.
The best locations for viewing the Aurora Borealis include northern Norway (Tromsoe), Iceland, Finnish Lapland, northern Sweden, northern Canada (Yukon, Northwest Territories), and Alaska. The southern hemisphere has its own version, the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights), visible from Antarctica, Tasmania, New Zealand, and southern Chile. Solar activity follows an approximately 11-year cycle, with auroral displays becoming more frequent and vivid during solar maximum periods.
Paricutin Volcano, Mexico
Paricutin is a cinder cone volcano in the Mexican state of Michoacan that is unique among the natural wonders because scientists were able to observe and document its entire life cycle from birth to extinction. On February 20, 1943, a farmer named Dionisio Pulido witnessed a fissure open in his cornfield, and within 24 hours, the volcano had risen to a height of 50 meters (164 feet). Within a week, it had reached 100 meters.
Over the next nine years, Paricutin erupted continuously, eventually reaching a height of 424 meters (1,391 feet) above the original ground level. The lava flows covered approximately 25 square kilometers (10 square miles) and buried the villages of Paricutin and San Juan Parangaricutiro, leaving only the church steeple of San Juan protruding from the hardened lava, an eerie sight that has become an iconic image of the volcano's destructive power.
The volcano ceased erupting in 1952, and geologists consider it unlikely to erupt again. Paricutin's inclusion on the natural wonders list recognizes it as the only volcano in recorded history whose birth and death were witnessed and scientifically documented from beginning to end. The site attracts thousands of visitors annually, many of whom hike to the crater rim or visit the half-buried church of San Juan.
Harbor of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Guanabara Bay, the natural harbor of Rio de Janeiro, is considered one of the most stunning natural harbors on Earth. Surrounded by dramatic granite peaks including Sugarloaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar) at 396 meters and Corcovado at 710 meters, the bay covers approximately 380 square kilometers and is dotted with over 100 islands. The dramatic interplay of mountains, tropical forest, sandy beaches, and azure water creates a landscape of unparalleled beauty.
The bay was formed by the erosion of the surrounding mountains and the gradual flooding of the valleys by rising sea levels at the end of the last ice age. Portuguese explorer Gaspar de Lemos arrived in January 1502 and mistook the bay for the mouth of a river, naming it Rio de Janeiro ("River of January"). The granite peaks that surround the bay, including Sugarloaf and Corcovado, are remnants of ancient intrusions of magma that cooled and solidified underground before being exposed by millions of years of erosion.
Today the harbor is overlooked by the Christ the Redeemer statue (itself a New Wonder of the World) and is a focal point of one of the world's most famous skylines. Despite pollution challenges in recent decades, Guanabara Bay remains an active commercial port, a popular sailing destination, and one of the most photographed landscapes on Earth.
Other Notable Natural Wonders
Beyond the traditional seven, several other natural wonders deserve recognition. The Amazon Rainforest, covering 5.5 million square kilometers across nine countries, contains 10% of all species on Earth. The Northern Lights' southern counterpart, the Aurora Australis, creates equally spectacular displays over Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Ha Long Bay in Vietnam features over 1,600 limestone karst islands rising from emerald waters. Iguazu Falls on the Argentina-Brazil border comprises 275 individual waterfalls along a 2.7-kilometer crescent.
In 2011, the New7Wonders Foundation organized a vote for the "New 7 Wonders of Nature," which selected Ha Long Bay (Vietnam), Iguazu Falls (Argentina/Brazil), Jeju Island (South Korea), Komodo Island (Indonesia), Puerto Princesa Underground River (Philippines), Table Mountain (South Africa), and the Amazon Rainforest (South America).
