Tallest Waterfalls in Europe: Norway's Giants and Alpine Wonders

Norway dominates Europe's waterfall rankings with glacier-fed cascades dropping hundreds of meters. These are the continent's tallest falls.

Vinnufossen in Norway is Europe's tallest waterfall, with a total drop of about 860 metres (2,822 feet), which also makes it among the ten tallest on Earth. Norway holds the great majority of the continent's highest falls — the top several places are all Norwegian — with Italy's Cascata delle Marmore and Switzerland's Alpine cascades the main non-Nordic contenders.

Europe's Ten Tallest Drops

Ranked by total height, including cascades and tiered sections:

  • Vinnufossen, Norway — about 860 m, near Sunndalsøra
  • Balaifossen, Norway — about 850 m, above the Hardangerfjord
  • Ramnefjellsfossen, Norway — about 818 m, near Nesdal
  • Vettisfossen, Norway — about 275 m, but the tallest unregulated free-falling waterfall in the country
  • Mårdalsfossen, Norway — about 705 m total, with a free fall around 358 m
  • Tyssestrengene, Norway — about 646 m
  • Kjøsfossen, Norway — about 225 m, but far better known than most because the Flåm Railway stops beside it
  • Cascata delle Marmore, Italy — about 165 m across three tiers, the tallest man-made waterfall in the world
  • Krimml Falls, Austria — about 380 m across three stages, the tallest in Austria
  • Staubbach Falls, Switzerland — about 297 m, a near-continuous free fall in the Lauterbrunnen valley

The lists you will find elsewhere reorder these constantly, and the reason is methodological rather than factual: some sources count only free fall, others count the entire descent including steep cascades over rock.

Two clarifications about the entries above are worth making explicitly. Cascata delle Marmore is not a natural waterfall at all: it was created by the Roman consul Manius Curius Dentatus in 271 BCE, who cut a channel to drain the stagnant marshes of the Velino valley into the gorge of the Nera below, and it has been managed ever since. It now runs on a published release schedule for visitors, with the flow diverted to a hydroelectric plant the rest of the time. And Vettisfossen ranks far below the giants on total height while remaining the more celebrated fall in Norway, precisely because it is protected from hydroelectric development and drops in a single uninterrupted plunge.

Why Norway Owns the Leaderboard

Norway's dominance is not coincidence but the direct product of three overlapping conditions.

First, glaciation. During the Pleistocene, thick ice sheets carved the main valleys far deeper than their tributaries, because larger glaciers erode more powerfully. When the ice retreated, tributary valleys were left stranded high on the walls of the main trough — hanging valleys. Any stream in a hanging valley must drop the full height difference to reach the main valley floor, and in Norway that difference is often measured in hundreds of metres. Almost every Norwegian giant is a hanging-valley fall.

Second, relief. Western Norway rises from sea level to over 2,000 metres within short horizontal distances, and the fjords are drowned glacial valleys with near-vertical walls, providing the drop.

Third, water supply. The North Atlantic and the prevailing westerlies deliver very high orographic precipitation to the western coast — parts of the region receive well over 3,000 millimetres a year — and extensive plateau icefields such as Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier in mainland Europe, supply sustained summer meltwater.

Bare rock matters too. Norway's hard Precambrian bedrock resists the headward erosion that in softer terrain would cause a waterfall to retreat upstream and degrade into rapids over geological time.

Vinnufossen and the Sunndal Cluster

Vinnufossen sits above the village of Sunndalsøra in Møre og Romsdal, fed by the Vinnufonna glacier on the flank of Vinnufjellet. Its water descends the mountainside in several distinct stages rather than one plunge, with the tallest single free fall generally cited around 420 metres. It is visible directly from the road, which makes the tallest waterfall in Europe unusually easy to see — no hike required.

Its flow is strongly seasonal, driven by glacial melt: it is at its most impressive from late spring through summer and reduces sharply once temperatures drop and the meltwater supply shuts off.

Nearby Ramnefjellsfossen, above Lake Lovatnet in Stryn, carries a darker history. The Ramnefjell mountain above the lake produced catastrophic rockslides in 1905 and again in 1936, generating displacement waves — effectively inland tsunamis — that destroyed the lakeside settlements and killed dozens of people on each occasion. The 1936 wave is reported to have run several tens of metres up the opposing slope.

The Alpine Contenders

The Alps produce spectacular falls but rarely the extreme heights, because Alpine valleys, while deep, are generally less abruptly walled than Norwegian fjord flanks and the catchments are smaller.

The Lauterbrunnen valley in Switzerland is the great exception in terms of concentration: a classic U-shaped glacial trough with vertical walls, containing 72 waterfalls, of which Staubbach Falls is the most famous. Its name means "dust brook", and it earns it — the fall is so tall and its flow so modest that much of the water atomises into drifting spray before reaching the ground. It reportedly impressed Goethe sufficiently to prompt a poem.

Also in Lauterbrunnen, the Trümmelbach Falls are genuinely unusual: ten glacier-fed falls running inside the mountain, carrying meltwater from the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau through a series of subterranean corridors accessible by a tunnel lift.

Austria's Krimml Falls in the Hohe Tauern National Park descend roughly 380 metres in three stages, and are among the most visited natural attractions in the country.

Iceland deserves separate mention within Europe. Its falls are rarely tall — Glymur, the highest, reaches about 198 metres — but they are unusually numerous and powerful, because the island combines very high precipitation, extensive icecaps such as Vatnajökull, and young basaltic bedrock that erodes into abrupt steps. Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss both drop about 60 metres over what was once the island's sea cliff, now stranded several kilometres inland by post-glacial uplift and coastal deposition.

Seasonal Falls vs Year-Round Falls

An important practical distinction separates Europe's waterfalls into two classes.

Glacier- and snowmelt-fed falls, which describes most of the Norwegian giants and the high Alpine cascades, are strongly seasonal. Peak flow arrives with the melt, typically May to July, and many reduce to trickles or freeze entirely in winter. Visiting Vinnufossen in February is a very different experience from visiting in June.

Rain-fed and lake-fed falls run far more consistently. The Rhine Falls at Schaffhausen in Switzerland — only about 23 metres tall but roughly 150 metres wide — is the most powerful waterfall in Europe by average flow volume, discharging on the order of 370 cubic metres per second, because it drains the entire upper Rhine catchment rather than a single mountainside. Dettifoss in Iceland, at about 45 metres high and 100 metres wide, is the other great volume waterfall, fed by the Jökulsá á Fjöllum glacial river.

Hydroelectric regulation adds a further complication. Norway generates the overwhelming majority of its electricity from hydropower, and several major waterfalls — Mårdalsfossen among them — are diverted for generation and released only during scheduled summer periods for tourism. The waterfall you see may be running on a timetable.

Measured Against the World's Giants

Placed globally, Europe's tallest falls are respectable but not leading. Angel Falls in Venezuela drops about 979 metres with an uninterrupted free fall of roughly 807 metres, and Tugela Falls in South Africa is quoted at a comparable total height. Vinnufossen's 860 metres sits within that top group by total height, but its descent is tiered rather than a single plunge, which is why it rarely tops global lists ranked by free fall.

By volume, Europe is decisively outclassed. Iguazú on the Argentina–Brazil border, Victoria Falls on the Zambezi and Niagara in North America all move vastly more water than the Rhine Falls. Inga Falls on the Congo River carries an average discharge orders of magnitude greater than any European fall.

Where Europe genuinely competes is in accessibility and density. Norway has thousands of waterfalls concentrated in a coastal strip served by roads, ferries and railways, and the Lauterbrunnen valley alone packs 72 falls into a few kilometres. When and How to See Them

A few practical notes:

  • Time the melt. Late May to early July is peak flow for the Norwegian and Alpine giants. August is still good; by October many are much reduced.
  • Check regulation schedules. Where a fall is used for hydropower, released-water periods are published locally and are the only times the full flow appears.
  • Height is not spectacle. The tallest falls are often thin ribbons that disperse into mist. Shorter, high-volume falls such as the Rhine Falls or Gullfoss in Iceland are frequently more dramatic in person.
  • Many are roadside. Vinnufossen, Kjøsfossen and the Sunndal falls need no hiking; Vettisfossen requires a walk of a couple of hours from Hjelle.
