Spring Tides

Spring tides occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth are aligned (during full moon and new moon). The combined gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon creates extra-high high tides and extra-low low tides. The tidal range (difference between high and low tide) is at its maximum. Spring tides have nothing to do with the season — they occur every two weeks year-round.

How it forms: The gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun align, pulling water in the same direction. This additive effect amplifies the tidal range.

Examples: Occur worldwide every 14 days during full and new moons; especially dramatic at the Bay of Fundy (tidal range up to 16 m)

Neap Tides

Neap tides occur when the Sun and Moon are at right angles to each other relative to Earth (during first quarter and third quarter moons). Their gravitational forces partially cancel each other out, producing the smallest tidal range — moderate high tides and moderate low tides.

How it forms: The Moon and Sun pull water in perpendicular directions, partially counteracting each other. This reduces the tidal bulge and minimizes the tidal range.

Examples: Occur worldwide every 14 days, alternating with spring tides; tidal range is typically 20-30% less than spring tides

Diurnal Tides

Diurnal tides have only one high tide and one low tide per day (approximately a 24-hour cycle). They are relatively rare and occur in specific geographic locations where the coastline shape and ocean basin geometry produce this pattern.

How it forms: Determined by the local geography, ocean basin shape, and the angle of the Moon's orbit relative to the equator. Certain coastline configurations amplify one tidal bulge while suppressing the other.

Examples: Gulf of Mexico (parts), South China Sea, parts of Southeast Asia

Semi-Diurnal Tides

Semi-diurnal tides have two nearly equal high tides and two nearly equal low tides each day (approximately a 12.5-hour cycle). This is the most common tidal pattern along most of the world's coastlines, particularly in the Atlantic Ocean.

How it forms: The Moon's gravitational pull creates two tidal bulges on opposite sides of the Earth. As the Earth rotates, each coast passes through both bulges daily, producing two highs and two lows.

Examples: Most of the Atlantic coast (both Americas and Europe/Africa), most common tidal pattern globally

Mixed Tides

Mixed tides have two high tides and two low tides per day, but with significantly different heights. One high tide is much higher than the other, and one low tide is much lower. Mixed tides are common along the Pacific coast of North America.

How it forms: A combination of lunar and solar tidal forces, combined with local geography, creates asymmetric tidal patterns where successive highs and lows are unequal.
