Countries With the Most Natural Gas: Ranked

Russia holds the world's largest proven natural gas reserves, but the United States is the single biggest producer. This guide ranks the leaders in both reserves and production and explains why the two lists differ.

Russia holds the world's largest proven natural gas reserves (roughly 47 trillion cubic metres), followed by Iran, Qatar, Turkmenistan, and the United States. But when it comes to actual output, the United States is the world's largest producer, ahead of Russia, Iran, China, Canada, and Qatar.

Introduction

Natural gas is one of the world's most important energy sources, used for heating, electricity generation, cooking, and as a feedstock for fertilisers and plastics. When people ask which country has the most natural gas, the honest answer depends on what you mean. There are two very different ways to measure it, and they produce two very different rankings.

The first measure is proven reserves: the amount of gas still in the ground that can be extracted economically with today's technology. The second is production: how much gas a country actually pumps out and sells each year. A nation can sit on enormous reserves yet produce relatively little, while another can produce huge volumes despite holding more modest reserves. Understanding that distinction is the key to understanding the global gas map.

Largest Proven Natural Gas Reserves

  • Russia: Holds the largest proven reserves on Earth, on the order of 47 trillion cubic metres, concentrated in the vast fields of Western Siberia such as Urengoy and Yamburg.
  • Iran: A very close second, with reserves near 34 trillion cubic metres, including a share of the enormous South Pars/North Dome field shared with Qatar.
  • Qatar: Sits on around 24 trillion cubic metres, almost all in the offshore North Dome field, the largest single non-associated gas field in the world.
  • Turkmenistan: Holds roughly 13 trillion cubic metres, headlined by the giant Galkynysh field, one of the biggest gas deposits ever discovered.
  • United States: Rounds out the top five with reserves around 12 to 13 trillion cubic metres, much of it in shale formations that have transformed the country's energy profile.

These five countries together control well over half of the world's known gas. Note how heavily the reserve rankings favour a handful of nations around the Caspian and Persian Gulf regions, where geology has concentrated extraordinary volumes of hydrocarbons.

Largest Natural Gas Producers

Who actually pumps the most

  • United States: The clear number one producer, generating well over 1 trillion cubic metres a year thanks to the shale revolution and hydraulic fracturing in basins like the Appalachian Marcellus and Texas's Permian.
  • Russia: The second-largest producer and historically the biggest exporter via pipeline, though its European market shrank sharply after 2022.
  • Iran: A major producer that consumes most of its gas domestically because of limited export infrastructure and international sanctions.
  • China: A large and fast-growing producer, yet it remains the world's biggest gas importer because domestic output cannot keep pace with demand.
  • Canada: A significant producer with abundant reserves in Alberta and British Columbia, exporting heavily to the United States.
  • Qatar: Modest in land area but a production powerhouse, and long the world leader in liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.

The contrast is striking. Russia has the most gas underground but the United States extracts the most each year. Qatar, third in reserves, sits below several larger economies in raw production yet punches far above its weight in exports.

Why Reserves and Production Differ

The gap between the two lists comes down to policy, technology, and economics. The United States produces more than its reserves alone would suggest because fracking unlocked shale gas at scale and a mature pipeline and market system rewards constant drilling. Iran and Turkmenistan, by contrast, hold immense reserves but produce less relative to that endowment, held back by sanctions, ageing infrastructure, and limited export routes.

Qatar shows the export angle clearly: it turned a single giant offshore field into a global LNG empire by liquefying gas and shipping it worldwide. Reserves tell you a country's long-term potential, while production tells you its present-day influence on prices and supply.

Good to Know

Which country has the most natural gas reserves?

Russia has the largest proven natural gas reserves, estimated at roughly 47 trillion cubic metres, ahead of Iran and Qatar. These reserves are concentrated in Siberian fields that have supplied Europe and Asia for decades.

Which country produces the most natural gas?

The United States is the world's largest natural gas producer, pumping well over 1 trillion cubic metres a year. Its output surged after the shale revolution made previously uneconomic gas accessible through hydraulic fracturing.

Why is the United States the top producer but not the top in reserves?

Reserves measure gas still in the ground, while production measures gas actually extracted. The US leads production thanks to shale technology, dense infrastructure, and market incentives, even though Russia and Iran hold larger reserves.
