How Do Mountains Form?

Most mountains form very slowly over millions of years. When two tectonic plates push toward each other, the land between them gets squeezed and pushed upward. It's like pushing two pieces of paper together on a table — they wrinkle and fold up. The Himalayas formed this way when the Indian plate crashed into the Asian plate.

Volcanic mountains form differently. They build up layer by layer as lava and ash pile up from eruptions. Mount Fuji in Japan and Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa are both volcanic mountains.
