Continental Peninsulas

Continental peninsulas are large landmasses connected to a continent and surrounded by water on most sides. They are formed by tectonic processes — plate collision, rifting, or erosion — and are large enough to contain multiple countries or regions. They are among the most significant geographic features on Earth.

How it forms: Formed by tectonic processes over millions of years: plate separation (Arabia pulling away from Africa), continental collision (India), or erosion and sea-level change exposing existing land shapes.

Examples: Arabian Peninsula (world's largest), Indian subcontinent, Scandinavian Peninsula, Iberian Peninsula, Italian Peninsula, Korean Peninsula

Headlands (Promontories)

Headlands are narrow areas of resistant rock that jut out into the sea from a coastline. They form when differential erosion wears away softer rock on either side, leaving the harder rock projecting into the water. Headlands are important for coastal defense and often feature dramatic cliffs.

How it forms: Differential erosion attacks softer rock (clay, sandstone) faster than harder rock (granite, limestone) along a coastline. The hard rock remains as a projecting headland while bays form in the soft rock.

Examples: White Cliffs of Dover, Beachy Head (England), Cape Cod (Massachusetts), Land's End (England)

Capes

Capes are narrow points of land extending into a body of water. They are similar to headlands but usually narrower and more pointed. Capes have historically served as navigation landmarks for sailors and often mark major geographic transitions — between oceans, seas, or climate zones.

How it forms: Formed by erosion, tectonic uplift, or volcanic activity creating a narrow projection of land into the sea. Some capes are the ends of mountain ranges that extend into the ocean.

Examples: Cape of Good Hope (South Africa), Cape Horn (Chile), Cape Cod (Massachusetts), Cape York (Australia)

Tombolos

Tombolos are sand or gravel bars that connect an island to the mainland (or to another island), creating a peninsula-like feature. The connection may be permanent or only visible at low tide (tidal tombolo). Tombolos form through wave deposition in the sheltered zone behind the island.

How it forms: Waves approaching from different angles refract around an offshore island, meeting in the sheltered zone behind it and depositing sediment. Over time, the sandbar grows until it connects island and mainland.

Examples: Mont-Saint-Michel (France, tidal tombolo), Chesil Beach connecting Portland to Dorset (England), Gibraltar tombolo (connecting the Rock to Spain)

Barrier Peninsulas

Barrier peninsulas form from elongated barrier islands or spits that become connected to the mainland at one end. They are essentially extended sand deposits shaped by longshore drift and wave action. Barrier peninsulas protect the coastline behind them from direct wave attack.

How it forms: Longshore drift carries and deposits sediment along the coast, building up sand formations. A spit grows from a headland and may curve back to connect with the coast elsewhere, creating a peninsula.
